We have recently started using HoloLens devices in our environment and still in the initial phase of how we should manage them. We are using Intune as a MDM solution to manage these devices, however one of our user when tried to login Dynamics 365 guides (using his Azure AD account) he was getting error message as "Guides isn’t set up correctly, or you may not have permission to access it. Contact your administrator or refer to the Guides documentation". We assigned Dynamics 365 guides license to user and after that when he tried to login he is now getting message as "Oops, you don't have permission to open this app. Contact your Dynamics 365 administrator to get the necessary permissions".

Is there anything we are missing here apart from licensing ? In one of the forum I read about assigning "Author" or  "Operator" role but when we login to Power platform admin center using admin account and look into default environment we do not see any such roles available. 

Please help, as I am sure we are missing some important steps or any prerequisite.

    Hi Suraj

    Sorry that you had trouble getting setup. It sounds like you haven't installed the Guides 'solution' in the dataverse environment. 

    Can you check this step in the setup process: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/mixed-reality/guides/setup-step-two

    Once the solution is intalled then you'll see the security roles (Author/Operator) available to assign. 

    Let us know how it goes and can further troubleshoot if needed.

    Hey Ryan,

    Thank you for replying. I was really expecting your reply on this. :)

    I asked our Power Platform admin to check which environment is set , there we could see company specific "default" environment and after going inside Dynamics 365 Apps I could not find Dynamics 365 guides as an app. Does this mean Guides solution is not installed on our environment ?

    If yes then I will ask their team to install Guides solution in default environment. Please find the apps listed in Dynamics 365 -

    Hi Suraj

    In order to initially install the 'solution' (it can be installed in the Default or a new environment) you need to have Guides license and System Admin role assigned to you. 

    Then you should see this: docs.microsoft.com/.../setup-step-two

    Hello Ryan,

    Thanks for your direction. We were able to install "Dynamics 365 Guides" solution under our default environment and could assigned Author and Operator role to user also. Waiting for user to login to guides app on HoloLens. I will let you know how it goes.

    Hello Ryan,

    Today user tried to login to Dynamics 365 guides on HoloLens device but again he is facing the same error as "Guides isnt setup correctly or you may not have permission to access it".

    This time we have assigned the user required roles too but still I am not getting why its failing. Apart from Dynamics 365 guides license do we need to assign any other licenses to user ?

    Can you check to make sure they also have the "Basic User" role assigned as well

    There can be a delay from the time of role assignment to propagate through the authentication system.

    This delay is noticeable longer if you are using the Default instance. 

    How long has it been?

    Yes user do have Basic User role assigned which is replaced by name "Common Data Service".

    There was more than 24 hours difference between role assignment and user attempted to login to guides.

    Today I had asked user to reinstall app from Store also, but still it dint work out.

    Please find the attached version of install guides app and solution.

    One thing you can try is to manually add the user to the environment by following these steps: docs.microsoft.com/.../add-users-to-environment

    We have all users already added in the organizations default environment. So how do you want me to proceed here ?
