We want to create manufacturing orders from sales order entry, which works well for the clients needs, however if they try to adjust the order quantities to override the backorder and invoice they get the message "you do not have access privileges to edit this field". Is there a work around other than killing the link between the SO and MO?

You are getting this error message when trying to change the quantity from Qty to Back Order to Qty to Invoice for the line item in the Sales Transaction Entry window (Transactions | Sales | Sales Transaction Entry):
"You do not have access privileges to edit this field. Contact your system administrator."
To deal with the error you have to have a process security setup in the system under Microsoft Dynamics GP |Tools | Setup | Manufacturing | System Defaults | Process security. You would add the user ids that you want to be able to perform the above procedures.
Once you have the Process security defined and the users selected, you would go to Tools | Setup | Sales | Sales order processing. Then, click Additional | Manufacturing Sales Order Prefs | System. Here you would assign the Process security you created above to the “Edit SO Quantities When MO is attached Process Security” option.
