Maintenance on Tier 2 Environments - SQL indexing etc.

Hi All,

While I was waiting for a task to finish I got to considering Tier 2 environment maintenance, as I'm seeing more and more shouts of "It is slower on the acceptance environment than the cloud hosted!"

Whilst the Tier 2 Environment a customer gets with their D365FO licenses is in Microsoft's Azure subscription they don't actually manage it as intensively as production.  They're not looking for locks at all, and I have been told by a support engineer that index maintenance is on the Partner/Customer as well.  After a quick look it seems that setting up index maintenance when the Azure DB is in a different tenant to you is quite a challenge!

I was looking for a discussion on what people do on their Tier 2 environments, what are you doing?

Seems like something like the below could be a requirement:

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/azuresqldbsupport/2016/07/03/how-to-maintain-azure-sql-indexes-and-statistics/

but it seems you can only automate this using Azure, and the Tier 2 environments are 'MS Managed'.  Has anyone tried doing the following with a Tier 2 Database, can you even see it?

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/azuresqldbsupport/2018/01/15/automating-azure-sql-db-index-and-statistic-maintenance-using-azure-automation/

Thoughts/Comments/examples welcome!

It is an LCS tooling which is usually version independent. However, the platform update version might be relevant here. The release announcement did not mention anything about the minimum version: blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../lcs-september-2018-release-notes

Thanks for response André.  I had a look in the Index Maintenance form on this Tier 2 environment and no data was collected. Do you happen to know if there is any minimum version for the D365FO instance to support this new feature?

    Hi Chris,

As of recently, you are able to monitor index fragmentation and act on it. If there is a need to do mass re-indexing, you can try to create a request for the Dynamics Service Engineers. Microsoft is actually working on better solution for the future.
