Functionality of using the chain id in customer set up

Can anybody explain this functionality?

     The help text reads:  "Chain which  the company is a member of"

    Probably used for reporting to get you data for all companies under one chain.

    Dear Dwayne, I am answering on the basis on my experience, nothing text book so it might differ so please confirm before considering it a final answer. Well, to my understanding this filed is usually used to keep the track of companies which belongs to different groups. Usually a family businesses grow in different companies but they still use the starting business as there main business name or parent concern. For example, there is a local group here in Pakistan with the name of Machiyara group this group contain more than 6 companies underneath. So as there is another group named "Umer Group" this group contain more than 12 companies in various industries but they all come under this group. Still they are individual entities but they use this main group as the business hub. So, such group of any company can be name in this field to keep the record of companies actual root. I hope the answer is satisfactory yet if you do find anything more suitable please do share it with everyone, specially me. Thank you.

    Appears nothing more than for tracking purposes.  I was wondering if there was any functionalily on this such as in pricing etc.

    It's definately just info only. Used for reporting and in marketing campaigns. There's no other functionality based on the chain.
