Hi,

I read that the Org Chart feature will be deprecated in November 2025. Are there any plans for similar new feature, or are there any recommended solution to replace the old org chart?

Cheers,
Sami

    Hello SP-30121257-0,

You are correct. Microsoft has announced the deprecation of the out-of-the-box Organization Chart web control in Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service, with the deprecation taking effect in November 2025.

As of now, Microsoft has not announced a direct, built-in replacement feature with the exact same visual representation and functionality as the legacy Org Chart web control. This means you'll need to look at alternative solutions to visualize organizational hierarchies within Dynamics 365.

Here are the recommended approaches and solutions to replace the old Org Chart:

    1. Embedded Microsoft Power BI Visual:

This is the most commonly recommended and powerful alternative. Power BI offers highly customizable organizational chart visuals that can be embedded within Dynamics 365 forms and dashboards.

    • Benefits:

      • Highly Customizable: Power BI offers a wide range of formatting options to match your organization's branding and specific needs.

      • Interactive: Power BI visuals can be made interactive, allowing users to drill down into the hierarchy, view details on demand, and potentially navigate to related records in Dynamics 365.

      • Data Integration: Power BI can connect to various data sources beyond just Dynamics 365, allowing you to incorporate data from HR systems or other relevant sources into your org chart.

      • Performance: Power BI is designed for handling larger datasets and can offer better performance than the legacy web control in complex scenarios.

      • Modern Look and Feel: Power BI visuals have a more modern and consistent user interface.

    • Implementation Steps:

      1. Connect Power BI to your Dynamics 365 (Dataverse) data. You'll need to identify the relevant entity (typically System User) and the fields that define the reporting hierarchy (e.g., Parent System User, Manager).

      2. Create an Organizational Chart visual in Power BI Desktop. There are several custom visuals available on Microsoft AppSource specifically designed for org charts (e.g., "Org Chart" by MAQ Software, "Hierarchy Chart").

      3. Configure the visual: Connect the appropriate fields from your Dataverse data to the visual's categories (employee), parents (manager), and any other relevant data points you want to display (e.g., title, department).

      4. Publish the Power BI report to Power BI service.

      5. Embed the Power BI visual into a Dynamics 365 form or dashboard. You can do this using the Power BI tile control within the form editor or dashboard designer.

      6.

    •

    2. Custom PCF (Power Apps Component Framework) Control:

You can develop a custom PCF control to render an organizational chart directly within Dynamics 365.

    • Benefits:

      • Tailored Functionality: PCF controls offer the most flexibility to create a visual that perfectly matches your specific requirements and integrates seamlessly with Dynamics 365.

      • Direct Integration: PCF controls are first-class citizens within the Dynamics 365 UI.

    • Considerations:

      • Development Effort: Building a custom PCF control requires significant development skills (React, TypeScript, etc.).

      • Maintenance: You will be responsible for maintaining and updating the custom control.

    • Implementation Steps:

      1. Set up your development environment for PCF.

      2. Choose a suitable JavaScript library for rendering organizational charts (e.g., OrgChart.js, D3.js).

      3. Develop the PCF control to fetch the necessary data from Dynamics 365 (using the Web API) and render the org chart using the chosen library.

      4. Package and deploy the PCF control to your Dynamics 365 environment.

      5. Add the PCF control to the relevant forms or views.

      6.

    •

    3. Solutions from Microsoft AppSource:

Explore Microsoft AppSource for third-party solutions that provide organizational chart functionality within Dynamics 365.

    • Benefits:

      • Pre-built Functionality: These solutions offer ready-to-use org chart visuals and often come with additional features.

      • Potentially Less Development Effort: Implementing a solution from AppSource might be quicker than building a custom PCF control.

    • Considerations:

      • Cost: Third-party solutions may involve licensing fees.

      • Customization Limitations: The level of customization might be limited compared to a custom PCF control.

      • Vendor Dependency: You will rely on the vendor for ongoing support and updates.

    • Implementation Steps:

      1. Browse Microsoft AppSource for organizational chart solutions compatible with your Dynamics 365 version.

      2. Evaluate different solutions based on features, pricing, and reviews.

      3. Install the chosen solution in your Dynamics 365 environment.

      4. Configure and embed the provided org chart components as per the solution's documentation.

      5.

    •

    Recommendation:

For most organizations, embedding a Power BI visual is likely the most practical and cost-effective replacement for the legacy Org Chart. It offers a good balance of customization, interactivity, performance, and integration with the Microsoft ecosystem.

If you have very specific UI or functional requirements that cannot be met by Power BI or AppSource solutions, then developing a custom PCF control might be considered, but be mindful of the development and maintenance overhead.

Start exploring Power BI visuals and consider piloting one in your environment to see if it meets your users' needs. Remember to plan your data model in Power BI to correctly represent your organizational hierarchy.
