CIJ Web Tracking: Web Click vs. Web Traffic - How works?

I can't figure out the exact difference between a web click and web traffic and I'm hoping there is no double counting.

Here is documentation from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customer-insights/journeys/interaction-journey-decision

Web tracking helps you learn about website usage by capturing:

  • Website visits: Captured every time a known customer goes to a page on your website.
  • Website link clicks: Captured every time a known customer selects a link, like a banner on your website.
Example:
I click through to page A or Land after being cookied on page A = visit (to page A url), correct?
I click a link on page A to page B = click (to page B url), correct?   Does this double count a visit to page B?

I am hoping someone has a  technical answer (no ai summaries please) as to when a click is registered and when a visit for web site tracking the way MS designed?

I have the same question (0)

    1. Website Visit
Recorded every time a known customer (one identified via cookie or form submission) loads a tracked page on your website.
Tracked via the JavaScript snippet placed in the page header, which logs each page request.
    2. Website Link Click
Recorded every time a known customer clicks on a link (like a banner or internal navigation link) on a page that contains the tracking script.

"I click through to page A (or Land) after being cookied on page A"
→ That’s a visit: it tracks that the person loaded page A. No click gets recorded for this action because they didn’t click anything to get there.
"I click a link on page A to page B"
    → Two events:
A link click is recorded (on page A).
When page B loads (and the tracking script is present), that counts as a visit to page B.
So yes, the visit to page B isn't double counted. The click-to-B is captured separately, and the page-load on B triggers a visit event separately.

    Hi Sai,

Great question! Understanding the difference between Web Clicks and Web Traffic in Customer Insights – Journeys (CIJ) is key to avoiding double counting and interpreting tracking data correctly.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Web Traffic (Visit)

      • A visit is recorded when a user lands on a tracked page and the CIJ tracking script is executed.
      • This typically happens once per page load, regardless of how the user arrived there.
    2. Web Click

      • A click is recorded when a user clicks a tracked link that has been instrumented with CIJ tracking.
      • This includes links in emails or on tracked pages that redirect to other tracked URLs.

    Your Example Breakdown:

    • Click to Page A or L: This is a Web Click if the link is tracked (e.g., from an email or another page).
    • Visit to Page A: This is a Web Traffic event triggered by the page load.
    • Click from Page A to Page B: This is a Web Click to Page B.
    • Visit to Page B: This is a Web Traffic event for Page B.

    Does this double count?

    • No, clicks and visits are tracked separately.
    • A click to Page B followed by a visit to Page B will result in one click and one visit, not two visits.

Let me know if this helps, and please mark the response as helpful if it answered your question 😊

    Best regards!
