Connect cloud Business Central to 3rd party application on-prem

Is it possible to connect 3rd party apps which run on-prem to Business Central cloud? For example, a specific laboratory software which runs locally. It's fine if there needs to be some middleware inbetween. The below articles may give a hint but I cannot figure out if it's just web apps or any apps.
