Determine pricing information for deploying D365 Finance and Operations on LCS in advance? (or- how to get a free trial environment?)

My team is looking to set up a dev/trial environment for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations.

Specifically, we would like to test its features to prepare for an upgrade from our current Dynamics AX 2012 environment.

However, management requires knowing the cost of deploying the Finance and Operations environment on LCS before deployment.

Is there a way to accurately calculate these costs?

I was unable to find cost information available on the LCS platform besides a link redirecting me to the Azure pricing calculator,

but without knowing all the components/resources the environment would use,

there was no way to determine accuracy of the costs we calculate based on assumptions.

Another way to bypass this problem is by acquiring a trial environment for free.

We had tried trials.dynamics.com, but Iacked the permission to sign up,

and unfortunately trying to locate the appropriate IT administrator who can give us the right permissions

will be even more time consuming in our (massive) organization.

I have attempted multiple points of contact with Microsoft sales on the Dynamics website, our internal Microsoft sales, and even a 3rd party reseller to try and set up this environment,

but these led to license quotations that were beyond our budget for a short term (2-3 months) trial environment, and one sales contact even redirected me back to LCS.

Hoping I can get some insight from the internet, and maybe this can also help other small teams tied up in big corporate red tape who have similar problems.

Thank you in advance.

    Hi ant403,

You can deploy a free trial on https://trials.dynamics.com. It should work with your organizational account. Otherwise, please indicate of you get errors.

There are some limitations on the trial. E.g. there is no option to do developments. I also wrote recently a blog about the trials: dynamicspedia.com/.../

The cost for hosting a machine on Azure is based on an hourly price. If you shut down the machine when you don't need it, you can save on these costs.

Hello, André. Thank you for the quick response.

We had tried signing up for https://trials.dynamics.com with our organizational account, but we received the following error:

    trialsDynamics_2D00_SignUpError.png

    [Sorry...

We can't finish signing you up.

Your IT department has turned off signup for Dynamics 365. Contact them to complete the signup.]

As mentioned in the original post, this error seems to be redirecting us to our internal system admin and gain permission for a trial. But at this point, this is currently not a practical solution within our organization.

Thank you for the link to the blog post, and for the tip about shutting down the machine to save on cost. However, what we need right now is an accurate quote to provide to our decision makers, if calculating one is possible.

Thank you again. I'm not sure if the above error provides any wiggle room for other solutions, but I am open to them.

    Hi Ant403,

You can try to setup a free Azure AD: azure.microsoft.com/.../

Then create a new directory with e.g. ant403.onmicrosoft.com. Then you own "your" domain and should be able to spin off a trial.

Deploying a machine yourself on Azure might also be blocked by your IT department. If you have access to LCS and are able to create Dynamics 365 projects, then you can also see if you can download a VM which could be hosted locally with Hyper-V. You need to have at least 16GB memory and a fast SSD. More memory is better.

Pricing: You can calculate the pricing using the Azure pricing calculator. A D13 machine would cost about $222 if you have it open on working days with on average 10 hours up-time. A D12 machine is about $111 per month.
