Licensing for MSD AX implementation across different countries

Hello,

We are currently running AX 2012 R3 in one country, say country A with X concepts in YY stores, in the next one year, there will be an addition of ZZ stores, in 2 different countries, this will increase store in country A and introduce new stores in country B. There will also be an addition of M new concepts with the growth of those many store. In terms of legal entities there will be three legal entities, country A and B and one consolidation company in country C acting as a consolidator. For country C, it will mainly consolidate all the stocks received before shipping them to country A and B where the selling will happen.

My questions:

1. Since we already have bought a Dynamics 365 Operations Server license for country A (it has been running since 2017), do we need to procure other D 365 Ops Server licenses for country B and C?

2. Can we use the same database but create different entities based on the regions? on a scale of 1 to 10, how risky is it to run in this centralized scenario?

3. If we are to run all companies off one database, will this also reduce other subsequent licenses for back-end users?

Thank you.

    Hi Moe,

    1) If you intend to include the new countries in the same environment, you can use the same license. However, if you need to scale up performance, you might need additional server licenses for additional AOS servers.

    2) You can run multiple countries in one environment. You have to take care of the correct security (also include organization assignments) and see if the local requirements are covered for the other countries.

    3) If you run all companies in one environment, you probably need more users licenses.

    Hello Moe,

As licensing questions and related issues are always complex and often change, I would recommend that you contact your local MS representation to clarify details with them.

This is probably the best and easiest way to get a concrete answer to your questions.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi @Amith and @André,

    Thank you for your responses.

The server license meant in my previous post is the Operations Server License and not Operations Store License.

Like @André Arnaud de Calavon stated in F&O there is no such thing called Store Server Licenses .

    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi Moe,

I have never heard of an Operations Store License. If you link POS systems to get retail statements, you need a device license per POS.

    Thanks @Amith Prasanna

    1. I agree with you on maintaining a single database for 3 entities. However, I need to know whether there is a limitation on the number stores operating on a Operation Server License, we currently have an active license for country A, is it true that this is limited to 20 stores and increase in stores means adding more Operations Store Licenses? and does using one Operations Server License for more than 20 stores impact on performance?

    2. Thank you for this good advice.

    3. Noted.

    Hi Moe

1.we used AX 2009, implemented from one country and used over 6 countries with 6 legal Entities (country wise single database hosted). i don't think there will be compliance issue . Any way you have to keep your entities under same database if you need to get consolidate report without struggling .

    2. you need to plan well if you are running system across multiple countries or the regions , because you have to do maintenance , apply fixes considering your business continuity. you have to have solid backup , DR and fail-over  strategy to mitigate risks.

    3.  If you create database per legal entity  with the same licences i think there will be compliance issues.

    Regards,

    Amith Prasanna
