Forecasting configurable demand

We are implementing AX12 and I need to know what others do about forecasting configurable items.

Our old system has a bom with a spot to enter a percentage of probability, meaning if you were chosing between 3 different options. The bom for item ABCD would have those items listed with a percentage like option 1 @ 35% and 2 @ 50%  and 3 @ 15%. After you put the configured item on a sales order it would make a unquie item like ABCD-0001 and would still consume the forecast for ABCD. For this example lets say we are forecasting 10 ABCD's a month for 12 months. Each month we would see demand for 3.5 of option 1 and 5 of 2 and 1.5 of 3. I may not be giving this issue a properly clear discription here, but I hope you have enough to help or at least ask some questions that I can answer and help make it more clear, and this getting your help in the end.

We build machines with different options the customer can ask for. I have not seen or heard of anything in AX that covers this problem for us.

I look forward to your responce.

Martin

In standard AX2009 and before your only option in standard  is to forecast at the configured level from memory, they are mandatory elements. I have not looked into this in AX12 so it may have changed. My understanding is if you want to forecast configurable items but take generic forecast figures and apportion them then you need to look into the MDIS market at demand planner/demand forecaster, but not something I have had actual hands on experience of.

Thank you Weaveriski for your responce. I am a little disapointed it doesn't do it when our 20 year old legancy system does. This forum must have manufactures doing assembly work with different options on the equipment being built. How are you forecasting and handling long lead items needing to be purchased and then have that forecast consumed ?

This will be handled in the traditional manner of building the product at sub-bom levels that cover the forecasting and forecasting at this level. You also cannot really be disappointed, it allows you to forecast at configured level, an MDIS allows you to forecast differently, so you have options, it is not that it does not do it, it is that it does not do it the same way as your 20 year old legacy system and was not one of the core fundamental points checked when assessing a new product and therefore not considered business critical by your own assessement.

I recommend you speak to your vendor and explore your options, because you have a few. I can tell you how companies I work with do this but many of them do it differently, and each do it how they want to do it. Most do not do it out of the box.
