Excel Add-in is Disabled

Hi All!

I had Excel Add-in working well for a while but after some change to the server (I suspect that this happened after installing Management Reporter) the add-in just stopped working. Now whenever I open Excel and go to the Dynamics AX tab, all the buttons are greyed out:

Does anyone have any idea how to fix it? I tried uninstalling Management Reporter, reinstalling Office Add-ins - all in vain.

Or perhaps someone could suggest where I can find some sort of a log which would explain what Excel Add-in is validating when Excel starts?

Thank you,
Maxim

P.S.: I am using Dynamics AX 2012 R2 with CU7 and Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010.

Thank you Iulian and Hans-Peter. I was able to resolve the issue and it was very basic issue that the user need to have the new sheet open before the add-ins are enabled. Sometimes the very basic issue takes more time to resolve :(

My apologies on the delayed response as well.

Do you get any errors in Windows Event Log when opening Excel?

    Hello Maxim

    Please check the following:

    - Was there a change on the serverside with Cumulative Updates or the AX Release?

In this case you should reinstall the Office Add-In.

    - Is there another Excel Add-In that could cause bad interferences?

    Regards,

    Hans-Peter

    RE: Excel Add-in is Disabled

    Hi Umesh,

I am a local administrator on the server that is running AX and Excel, and I am also a system administrator in AX.

However, strangely enough, when I run Excel using the Run as administrator option, the Add-in is inactive upon opening Excel. And I cannot activate it. I go to Excel Options/Add-ins, then Manage COM Add-ins. I can see Microsoft Dynamics AX Add-In for Microsoft Excel there but when I tick the checkbox and click OK nothing happens. The add-in remains inactive. Then, when I close Excel and run it normally, the Add-in appears to be active but still all the buttons are disabled.

    RE: Excel Add-in is Disabled

    Hi Ganesan,

Thank you for the idea. Unfortunately it did not help. I refreshed WCF configuration for both Business Connector and Local Client targets. Then I tested it by starting the AX client. The configuration is definitely correct. But the add-in buttons in Excel are still disabled.

The AIF services are also active. I even tried deactivating them and activating them again. Nothing changes.

There's a new problem in Excel that I noticed just now and which must be related to the main issue. Every time I close Excel I get the 0x800A03EC exception:

I think this exception essentially means that the add-in is trying to call an object which does not exist. I believe this error is something like "Object reference was not initialized". However, I don't know how to find out the details. Maybe if I knew which object does not exist this could give me a clue.

    Thank you,
    Maxim

    RE: Excel Add-in is Disabled

    Hi,

Not sure of the cause, Have you tried to refresh the WCF configuration, if not,

    Go to Client configuration utility,

in the Configuration Target > select Business connector

check if the configuration is pointing to the right server / post / WSDL Posr

    then click refresh configuration

once the refresh is complete, Click apply button

Now Open Excel and see this is resolved.

also check all the AIF services are active from the systems administration > Setup > Services and application integration framework > Inbound ports

if not activate Aif* and BI* services

    RE: Excel Add-in is Disabled

    Hi Venkatesh,

    Thank you for you reply.

I have checked that and the add-in is definitely active:

I tried removing this add-in from the list of installed add-ins in Excel, but then I could not add it back. I always get the message that "Microsoft.Dynamics.AX.Framework.OfficeAddin.Excel.dll is not a valid Office Add-in". So I had to uninstall the Office Add-Ins and install them again. Now the tab appears but all the buttons are still disabled.

    Regards,
    Maxim

it is possible that AX Excel Add-in might be disabled. can you please check that ?

Open Excel --> File --> Options --> Addins --> Manage --> Disabled items --> Go
