Is the Dynamics GP 2018 Year End Update Required before you can get the 2022 Payroll tax update?

Hi,

We're currently on Dynamics GP 2016 and about to upgrade to 2018 18.3.1290.  Normally in the past when we do the payroll tax upgrade at the end of the year, I install the year end update then do the tax update.  But this year, I'm not going to be able to do that.  Our dynamics is integrated with our ERP system and they haven't certified anything past 2018 18.3.1200.  They will have an update out January that is certified with 18.4.

As I understand, there isn't going to be a 2022 payroll tax update for Dynamics GP 2016, so we're going to have to upgrade to 2018.

My question is, so long as we're on a version of 18.3, can we can still apply the 2022 tax update without installing the year end update, which bumps the version up to 18.4.1384?

    Hello Chris,

You are correct, mainstream support for GP 2016 ended in July, so only GP 18 will have year-end updates and tax updates available going forward.

You will need to install the 2021 YE update to get the changes for 1099-NEC, 1096, 1099-R and Fixed assets luxury auto depreciation.  There doesn't appear to be any W2 changes this year.  Here is the blog link for the year-end update, and the direct link to the YE update page on our DOC site which also lists the changes:

Use this resource for upgrade paths:

You will want to make sure to issue your last payrun in 2021 with the 2021 taxes in place, install the YE update, then generate the Year end wage file also with the 2021 taxes in place so the correct FICA limit for 2021 is used.  Print all your W2 and 1099 statements and ACA forms.  Then you can load the 2022 tax update when you are ready to issue your first checkrun in 2022 so you get the new FICA limit.  The steps are outlined in this article:

KB -Year-end closing procedures for Microsoft Dynamics GP Payroll

Per your question:  Can you install the 2022 tax update R1 without installing the 2021 YE update?     The 2022 R1 tax update is 'all inclusive' of all prior updates before it, so it will include the 2021 YE update in it.

I hope this information and resources will help.

    Thank you

    Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for the info.  Unfortunately, I'm not able to apply any of the 2018 Year end updates, since they are not certified to work with our ERP system yet and won't be until sometime next year.

If I'm currently running 2018 18.3.1290, can I still apply the payroll tax update cab file (U.S. Payroll Tax Update for Microsoft Dynamics GP) without installing the year end update?

There were no changes to the W2, W3, W4 or electronic filing, so you can apply the 2022 tax update without installing the year-end if you are currently on 18.3.1290.  You may want to extract the cab file and run the SQL script.   Otherwise, it may not work as an automatic update.  Please note there were changes to the 1099-R and the 1095-C form, so if you are printing those forms, you may want to install the YE update to get those changes.  You can read the Payroll and ACA blogs on this link:

    Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for the help.  I've extracted the TX.sql file from the TX.cab and ran it to update payroll tax for 2022.  One oddity I noticed on the TX.sql file is that it has a file date of 1/17/2014, but the last sql insert query does have the correct date:

    INSERT INTO [UPR41303] VALUES(1,'December 16 2021 12:00:00:000AM','Jan 01 1900 12:00:00:000AM')

    Happy New Year!
