Unable to open a workflow

Hi All,

A workflow has been saved and activated, but no users are now able to open it. When clicking on it you are presented with an 'Unexpected Error. An error has occurred. Try this action again. If the problem continues..........'.

It is only happening on the one workflow, and are using the Settings > Processes menu to access it.

Other processes that are activated and owned by the same user do not throw this error.

Could the workflow be corrupted?

Thanks,

Lewis

What CRM version are you on?

    Please provide screenshots if possible.

What is the workflow supposed to do?

How is it set-up as of now?

Do you have a similar Workflow set-up now that does work?

    Cheerio

    Hi Luc,

    Thanks for your response.

The screenshot of the error when trying to open the workflow is included.

The customer is on CRM 2013 Online. I haven't been able to open the workflow so do not know what are in the steps, but the Primary Entity is Opportunity.

It is in status Draft and cannot be Activated. When I try to activate it, I get the error log below.

Unhandled Exception: System.ServiceModel.FaultException`1[[Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.OrganizationServiceFault, Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk, Version=6.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35]]: System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Microsoft Dynamics CRM has experienced an error. There are over 20 workflows, including 9 other workflows for Opportunities that do not have this issue.

    Thanks,

    Lewis

    Hello Lewis,

    Thanks for the detailed information.

Are you able to include the workflow in a separate solution, export it and have a look at the definition? Looks like the workflow is corrupted.

Have you also tried assigning it to yourself and try and open it within the UI?

Has this workflow been migrated from another environment or it was created on the one you are trying to open it?

    Thanks,

    Mario

    Hi Mario,

    Thanks for the response.

I have been able to export the workflow through a new solution. Is there something that I should look for in the exported files?

I have had the workflow assigned to me but I still receive the error when trying to open it.

The environment was upgraded to 2013 within the last 2 months, and the workflow existed in the environment before the upgrade.

    Thanks,

    Lewis

    Hello Lewis,

Open the Solution.zip file and go to the workflows folder, then you can open your workflow with either Notepad ++ or Visual Studio and depending on your technical level, or also how much do you want to bother:

    a) Check what the workflow is doing and replicate it.

    b) Try and find why the XAML is corrupted.

Let me know if you need any help with the XAML, I am happy to help, however I am conscious that in order for me to have a look you may need to share the workflow with me and it can contains important information.

    Thanks,

    Mario

    Hi Lewis,

i also faced the same problem.

for resolving this issue. just go to the CRM server and reset IIS server.

steps for how to Reset IIS are:

    1. go to the CRM server.

    2. Open Command prompt(CMD) as an administrator.

    3. when CMD is opened.

    4. Type command "IISRESET".

    5. when the services reset is complete.

    6. then open your CRM in new browser.

    7. hopefully issu will be resolved.

if its helpfully for you then please marked as an answer.

I know this is a tad old, but seeing as someone responded this year, I thought I'd chime in.

I recently had an Action in CRM 2013 that was throwing a generic error like what you were received.  However, in the URL, I was able to discern that it was an invalid parameter name that was causing the error.  So even though the error seemed generic, it was giving me enough detail in the URL to troubleshoot.

If one of these generic errors occurs again, check the URL to see if it adds any insight.
