one off Master data import in AX 2012 R3

Hi,

I want to import master data in 10 tables which are not inter related and which even doesn't have any corresponding child tables. It's plain data entry in those tables. This is one time master data entry. Later on User would do it from the screens they have been provided.

I don't know why MS removed AX 2009 feature of Excel Template Wizard and excel import  from AX 2012. It was good for plain data entry stuff.

I explored DIXF framework, but it seems for each table i need to create entity which in turn creates those many staging tables and classes. For one time data entry, i obviously would not go for this lengthy and illogical operations.

I also explored Excel Add-ins feature. But I am not sure whether System administrator at my customer's end has installed Excel add-in at his end or not.

Is there any better way than above 2 options ? Please guide.

These are all standard tables for which there are no entities provided in DIXF.

These are tables for Injury and illness setup in Human resources management.

    Hi VDY,

As I can understand Excel Template is removed because of change in AIF architecture in Dynamics AX 2012.

and to improve the performance using new AIF web service option Excel Add-ins utility is provided... which is more or less same as Excel Template wizard option in Dynamics AX 2009

only demerit related Excel Add-ins utility in AX 2012 is it does not provide and good informative template same as AX 2009 Excel Template Wizard

DIXF framework is also a good option in AX 2012..

In this you have option to generate the template

As per you requirement to import master data in 10 table

I suggest you should utilize the Excel Add-ins option, It is will be good and straight forward and no development effort will be required.

Using DIXF will may require some development.

Please verify and update us with you findings and let us know if this information helps you.

    Hi VDY,

You can setup those tables in DIXF without creating Entities. In the Target entities form you can create a new line and use Entity type 'Table' and then fill the table name.

You can then use the processing group and use this target entity. Note that this option directly imports the data in the target table without using a staging table. Also note that it will only supports importing of records. Updates on existing records are not working then (It was not working 1 year ago...).

    Hi Andre,

This is helpful but still lot of work for system admin to generate processing group and set target entity for each table. My problem is that system admin group is new to AX and it may be little bit complex to carry out these activities on production environment even if I provide documentation to them.

As it's first time data upload, what i am planning to do is to create a job  and write code to insert data in each table. it's Hard coded script.

and after my deployment, System administrator has to just run that Job.

    Hi VDY,

I like your thoughts on this. You indeed have to setup processing groups. Like Umesh and Nitesh mentioned it is also possible to use the Excel add in. Here you also have to create a template which takes some time to setup.

If you create a job and write code, it will also takes time for development...

So as a consideration... the best method depends on factors like one-time only or using the script multiple times, setup versus development, start job directly or using scheduled batches and number of records (performance). At the end people do have their own preferences. When the data import is succeeded, every method is correct ;)
