A question about Non Continuous Number Sequences

I understand the distinction between Continuous and Non-Continuous number sequences, my question stems from the nature of what causes the non-continuous numbers to have large gaps and where to search for a root cause.

We have noticed that our production order number sequence is growing at many times the amount of production orders we are producing. If I convert the production order number sequence value to a true number, then order it descending, there are gaps often 1000 numbers higher than the preceding number. Surely this is not an intended behavior? Is there some errant code that could easily cause this situation that I can search for?

I would suggest you check your number sequence setup, specifically the pre-allocation setting on it.

Possibly, you might have a large number of numbers to be pre-allocated in there, and then if the cache is cleared (due to restart or whatever), the numbers are lost.

This specific number sequence has no preallocation configured.

    Hi Nic,

If it's not preallocation like Ivan suggested, it is possible some automatic task is causing this.

Non-continuous number sequence in it's simplest form will just provides a number when asked and increment the "next" value without asking questions. So, for example, if some code catch exceptions and retry 100 times before successfully create a production order, then 99 numbers will be skipped.

As a start, you can figure out *when* the numbers are being drawn if you setup database logging on the NumberSequenceTable to help investigate what happened.

    Regards,

    Dominic
