NAV 2013 R2 - Web Portal

My company is using NAV 2013 R2 (with a waste sector specific software bolt on application) and we would like to create a new portal. Our Microsoft partner, who also owns and provides the software application, presented a simple portal and said that we could have it for a licence fee and implementation costs. However, they also stated that we had to have a specific portal object in NAV that was not included in our licence and would have to be purchased from Microsoft. We do have available objects however not a specific portal object. I am somewhat dubious about this specific portal object as these guys have been a little "smoke and mirrors" previously. I would expect that any 3rd party developer could create a portal using data extracted from NAV in the same way that Jet Reports or Power BI can use the data. There may not be the availability to enter data into the system directly from the portal but simple access to information should be possible?

Can anyone advise me if a specific portal object is required and also if a 3rd party can develop a portal from NAV?

Many thanks,

Rob

I suppose, it relates to licensing, and this topic can be quite complex. As you have described it, it might sound to me as External users access. As per the licensing guide:

    Access by External Users

Your customers are external users. The Starter Pack includes the rights for an unlimited number of external users to access the ERP solution without the need for individual Access Licenses as long as following two restrictions are met:

    • External users cannot use any clients provided by the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Programming Interface (API), such as the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 Windows client, the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 Web client, the Microsoft Dynamics NAV for Windows, the Microsoft Dynamics NAV for iPad or iPhone app, or the Microsoft Dynamics NAV for Android Tablet or Phone app.
    • External user licenses cannot be used by you to provide business process outsourcing services to your customers.

Your system administrator designates external users in the user table by assigning such users an External User designation.

E.g., acceptable uses include web shop integration and customer portals.

However, there has to be avoided Multiplexing (http://www.microsoftlicensereview.com/?tag=microsoft-multiplexing).

How does you partner licenses their own portal solution?

    Hi Alexander,
Thank you for the response. To be honest, I do not know how their portal solution is licenced - it can't be through their normal Microsoft application so must be an independent solution licence. I understand the point you make above but still do not understand why a specific portal object is required over and above the normal objects or remaining development objects that we purchased in addition to the start pack? Any thoughts?
