Troubleshooting printing

Hello!

I am the new administrator of an established AX 2012 R2 CU6 implementation (our company has been live for a bit over a year).

I have a print issue that I'm wondering if the group might be able to give some advice on...  our AR clerk processes invoices in batches, and at the end of the batch, each invoice should be printed.  What we are seeing is that random invoices from the batch fail to print.  There is no rhyme or reason to the missing invoices, and she has been seeing this since the application went live.

My experience with 2012 is limited at this point, so I'm troubleshooting this as a print server issue, but not having luck so far.  There are no errors logged on the print server, nor are there any reported by her pc.

This type of problem feels like a spooling (or lack of) issue... if the job were set up to begin printing immediately and not to be spooled at the printer, I could see something like this happening if there was a bottleneck or a communications hiccup.  However, I don't know how to go about proving (or disproving) my theory.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or advice?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

    RE: Troubleshooting printing

    Hi,

I also have this issue.  All orders are actually invoiced but invoices are not sent out via print/ email.  The infolog shows all the orders that it processes, and on next line it states whether sent to printer or email etc, but like the OP it sometimes just seems to skip orders randomly i.e. in the below example it ignored order 0169475

    Order ID: 0169474
The report has been successfully sent as attachment to email.
    Order ID: 0169475
    Order ID: 0169476
Report SalesInvoice.Report was sent to printer P3093.
    Order ID: 0169477
The report has been successfully sent as attachment to email.

The system is processing around 600 orders usually in each run, and can get between 40-60 orders missed.  If i restore the data pre-invoicing to a test system and process there it had just 1 issue, so still not perfect but proves its not data :(

Only thing i can think of is that it more system resource or locking issue?

RE: Troubleshooting printing in AX 2012

    Hi Baber,

I will try that and get back to you.  It's a bit of a pain, as I will need to go into each customer and change their print management setup, but I agree that it will be an effective way to isolate the problem.

I think that I will set up a local printer on the accountant's computer to isolate the print server entirely.

I will get back to you, but it will be a couple of days.

Thanks Smilner for explaining your scenario. I would suggest you to try changing the Destination printer in TEST environment under print management settings. Just set it to a local printer on client machine for testing purposes and then see if it works fine in that case. If it works, then there is surely a problem with printing on your print server.

Please let me know if you have further queries and mark the previous answer as verified if it helped you in some way.

RE: Troubleshooting printing in AX 2012

    Hi Baber,

Thanks for the tip.  As I was looking through the logs, I realized that I hadn't asked explicit enough questions of my AR person... grrrr

It turns out that she isn't printing from a 'batch' job at all.  She is working from the 'Shipped but not invoiced sales orders' gridview    (Accounts receivable > Common > Sales orders > Shipped but not invoiced sales orders).

Each morning she modifies the orders as needed, makes her selections, and posts the invoices.  Our AX is set up to use print management destinations to email or fax the customers and to print a copy to a local printer.

I checked the print management setup for a few customers, and they seem to be using our print server and not printing to a printer on the AOS or a printer on the local client.

Unfortunately, the print server isn't logging any errors at all during the time that her invoices are printing.  I'm going to look deeper and see if I can find the job logs, but my bet is that there will be only one job shown for the entire invoice print process.

Sorry that my initial information wasn't correct!

    Hi Smilner,

Did you check the batch jobs log to see what errors are showing there? This may give you some clue.

    Thanks,

    Baber.
