Deleting A Dimension

Hi,

Is there anyway to delete a Dimension completely from the system?
I have tried VLDM, Dimension Correction tools.. They only change or remove the Dimension value from a particular transaction.
I want a Dimension to be completely removed along with its values.

Thanks.

I have the same question (0)

If all transactions have the trace of it removed does it still error when you try to delete from the dimensions page?

Failing that you will need to use the blocking features. Try deleting again after a close income statement

If being removed from all the transactions it will surely be deleted form the dimension's page easily. But one cannot go through all the transactions one by one to delete a particular Dimension. I am looking for an easy way to do it.

Yeah Blocking is an only option I guess that remains valid. But the blocked dimensions remain visible. And that's surely not what I am looking for.

Do you have “Dimension Corrections” available in your version? If so that is a method go through the data on mass. docs.microsoft.com/.../dimension-corrections-gl-entries

Again if on the latest version for dimensions you can restrict selections: docs.microsoft.com/.../more-control-over-settings-default-dimensions

Just to add to what Josh i saying.

You should be aware that the dimension correction tool only correct the dimensions on the G/L entries. If the dimension you want to delete is used on other transactions than G/L entries you will need another method.

    Hey Bruvik,

Exactly, Have tried Dimension Correction. But that's surely not the solution for what I am looking for. Neither I want to erase Dimensions through each transaction entry.

I don't think there is any other way than to write some code to delete the dimensions. But at the same time you will have to update all the references to the dimension set to keep your data consistent.  It is doable but it would require some good analysis of your data and how and where your dimension is used. And you would need to test it in a Sandbox of course before you can do it in production.

Rightly Said. Is there a way to find out where a certain Dimension is been used?

You can have a look in app source. There are some app's published there that might be able to do what you are looking for.

    appsource.microsoft.com/.../apps

I think you should look at those who have functionality around dimension correction and see if any of those covers your need first.

    Hi

We did it one time using the following method:

    1) Dimension Manager has a batch navigate change. You need to go the General Ledger Entries. Then filter for the dimension you need, select them all, then use the app (Actions -> VLDM ->Batch Navigate ..). It is important to use Batch Navigate to change all related documents. This way all dimensions for all documents change (invoice, Production order, etc) to new dimension.

    appsource.microsoft.com/.../PUBID.dynamicsnavaddon|AID.dimensionmanager|PAPPID.93678dd0-af16-46ec-a58b-a89808fba8f7

    2) Above action may take long time.

    3) After doing this you should be able to delete the dimension.

Alternative you can develop a code to does the same method of above app. Basically to find related entries and update those as well.
