Fields: Originating Lead Lookup / Lead source option set, what's the difference?

Hello,

On the contact window, I don't understand why I have a lookup field to originating lead, and after that, an optionset for lead source that I can customize...

What's the purposem the difference?

    Information from a lead record can be turned in Account, Contact and Opportunity records by using the Qualify button. When doing so, the Originating Lead lookup field is populated with a link back to this Lead record. Of course this isn't always the case of how a Contact record could get into the system so the additional Lead Source field gives you some additional flexibility on tracking the source.

    It was setup that way since the initial version of CRM so that in addition to capturing the CRM lead that it was qualifying from it also copy of the "lead source" to a local field in Contact.  Potentially both can be store different data - Contact that didn't came from a qualified lead yet needed to track a "lead" source for that contact.
