Weird permission issue with GP 18.3x and Parallels using GP Installation Package

Posted on by 75,730

We can successfully install the GP client. The problem comes in when we launch the GP client for the first time.

It has to synchronize a file call DYNAMICS.DIC to what it finds on the server.

This file is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2018

For whatever reason something is blocking it from updating that file. I have never seen such behavior in the 25+ years I have been installing GP.

The one difference is Parallels and the few times I have run into this on the GP Forum there are always problems. In my opinion there is some permission issue.

Do you think installing GP into some other folder outside of C:\Program Files (x86) may help?

Personally I would dump Parallels but that may not be an option.

its working, I use it on https://www.besttenrackets.com it's working successfully there. There's no issue in it.

I would have my doubts as it was never synchronized in the first place. Maybe during the next update we will try this.

Interesting, I wonder if you could rename the Dynamics.dic to be OldDynamics.dic, run a Repair of Dynamics GP which would only re-create that dictionary file and have it work also?

    Thanks for the update.

Derek, this was an issue with security for Parallels. They had to grant Full Control to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP to Everyone.

    The issue was this:

    1) You launch GP Utilities and watch the synchronize box go by

    2) You launch GP and you would the GL segment mismatch message

    3) When you look in the DEX.INI you see SYNCHRONIZE=FALSE is the setting

    4) The temporary fix was to copy DYNAMICS.DIC off the server to the T/S running Parallels

For whatever reason I could install the GP client but GP Utilities could not update the DEX.INI file nor DYNAMICS.DIC. I hope this helps anyone else using GP under Parallels.

Since you're using a Installation Package to install, it may require GP Utilities to be run to synch the dictionary files with the account framework, which is normal for new or modified installs of Dynamics GP. We have to do this after a Repair as well.

Are you able to launch GP Utilities from this install and if so, does it synch the dictionary files and resolve this issue?

Looking in the Dex.ini, if it shows SYNCHRONIZE=TRUE, the synchronization hasn't gone through and we normally don't want to manually change that to FALSE either.

To verify Parallels, you can rename the existing Dynamics GP directory, run a Repair against it which would re-create the entire GP directory including files and folders, but without any third party products nor modified forms/reports dictionary files, so, if you can successfully synch the dictionary files with this 'new' GP instance and login without issues, then that would seemingly help prove the issue is Parallels and/or another third party product.

At that point, we would add back these third party products, one by one, testing after each one, until the issue returns. This is true for the forms/reports dictionary files as well.

    Thanks,
