How to connect D365 F&O with Power BI using Web API

Posted on by 100

Hi guys,

in a current project, we want to analyze some data stemming from D365 F&O. In order to do so, we have set up the Power BI Integration in D365 F&O, as indicated in : Configure PowerBI.com integration - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Docs

This worked fine as we did get the needed configuration:

Now, I thought I can use these credentials also when logging into Power BI desktop using Web-API: When connecting to D365 (online) using Web-API method, this screen appears:

However, I have no idea what key to insert here. The key provided by D365 F&O from the screen above does not work. I have look upon the I-net, but all tutorials do only show how to connect do D365 using an organization account. This is a way we do not want to use.

So, can anybody tell me how to connect Power BI to D365 F&O using Web-API?

I also would like to know how to connect to OData / F&O by using the Web API, without using a named user or organizational account.

I still did not figure out what Power BI means and want from the field "Key", I tried every keys or IDs from Azure AD app registration and it throws the error message "A web API key can only be specified when a web API key name is provided."

I would only like to use Web API Key of Dynamics, so that login should be non interactive.

So, is there any way to generate the Web API Key of Dynamics, which I can further use in Power BI ?

    Hi Florian,

Why you have to use web API to connect to D365FO?

In your dialog, you can select Organizational account and click Sign in button.

You'll access all the tables you're allowed to access according to your security rights and privileges, then you could pick the table you want in the list and load them to the Power BI and start working.
