Hi,

Theoretically, if the only access we have to our target system (AX 2012 R3) is via VPN through to Windows Server 2012, in order for the Excel Add-In to work would Excel need to be installed on the server?

Thanks in advance

Yes. If you want to work with Excel Add-in in Ax 2012 R3, you need to install Excel on server and also need to install Office Add-ins using AX setup media.
