Please check the document about document management in AX2012:

D365FO is a cloud-hosted SAAS product, so the document management for D365FO is mainly based on SharePoint.
In contrast, document management in AX2012 is stored locally, which is probably easier to understand.
In earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX, the functionality was called document handling. In D365 FO, it’s called document management. The functionality is same with some enhanced value added features Now document management can also be integrated with Office 365.
