Origin of the financial dimensions on the project cost transaction of a timesheet

Hi All,

Let me start off by stating I'm not sure in which forum to put it, the client is using Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (says so right in the help section) but this is no option as a D365 forum. My question is regarding the Project management and account module, we haven't and are not switching yet to Dynamics 365 Project Operations. We are using version 10.0.14 (10.0.605.20022).

With that being said, I think I need some help understanding how the financial dimensions are picked up from the project cost transactions. I had some strange dimensions on the project cost transactions and started to do some extensive testing to see where this came from. What prompted me were two things:

1. I got a warning that the CostCenter was not filled in and could not be validated against the P&L account structure.

Not sure which of the multiple transactions in the timesheet this was reflecting to I checked all the projects, customers, employment, funding sources I could find for financial dimensions and setup something for everything. Still the warning, it turned out the warning was for a project with the type Internal.

2. On a cost posting transaction I saw a dimension filled in that was neither on the project nor on the employee, so to me this was strange and unexpected.

For this it turned out that on the funding source the dimension was set to a wrong type and the project cost transaction had picked up the dimension from the funding source.

If the project cost transaction of a timesheet indeed picks up the dimension from the funding source it makes sense no dimensions can be found for the Internal project. Because a project of the type internal does not have a funding source. In our situation it is just meant to be collecting cost.

Does anyone know if this is fixed by the system that the funding source is the place from where the dimensions are taken, or have we missed some setup to indicate the project dimensions can also be used on the timesheet transaction?

Regards,

Remco

    Hi Aartserp,

The funding source and the findim defined there should not have an influence on your timesheet unless something has been customized.

That is because you can post timesheets even on project that don't have a funding source.

Standard D365FO has the option to setup a findim at the project level and the employee level. Those findims are usually taken for timesheet postings.

An exception might be a situation where you defined a fixed financial dimension for a ledger account in the chart of accounts.

If you have done this then those fixed findims overwrite everything else.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

Hi Ludwig, Thank you for your answer.

This is exactly how I would expect Dynamics to react, however in my situation it doesn't. One rule we try to maintain in the implementation is do no customizations so I don't believe there are customizations on this.

We are not live with the timesheets so i don't have any transaction from our previous version 10.0.11 but I think we did not encounter this problem before. I have the feeling this way of working is newly introduced in 10.0.14 (or 13 which we skipped). I have one dev environment on 10.0.11 I wanted to test this but there I am getting the problem that the main accounts are not recognized (accounting distribution is empty). Monday I will continue to test in there, but i was wondering if anybody else has seen this way of working and maybe had found an explaining for it.

    Regards,

    Remco

    Hi Remco,

Have you checked LCS for available hotfixes?

If there is nothing available there then get into contact with the MS support by opening a new ticket.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig
