What is your feed back about this tool "For NAV" http://fornav.com?

Posted on by 460

We are updating our system from NAV_2009 SP1 to Navision 2016 (CU 18). We already upgraded all tables, forms,Code units objects to 2016 object standard.

Now our next step is that we have almost 240 reports which need to be converted from NAV_2009 to NAV_2016 RDLC report design. One of my friends told us that this tool "ForNav" could do the job.

My only problem with this tool is that when I convert my report from 2009 to 2016, If i want to design the new report (which is converted from 2009 to 2016 through ForNav tool) it will open the report in a design layout which is similar to 2009 (ex: Header, Section...).

The question what do your (Navision Developers & Project Managers) recommend? Should we use this tool? or Should we develop the reports our self using the RDLC designer?

our deadline is this December 2017.

Please have a look at IDYN Document Creator. It provides you with a good Report Convertor, and just as important, a powerfull report designer with features and capabilities like RDLC and even more. A structured dataset, an interactive report viewer, eventing, and so on.

Fully right, and that's one of the few drawbacks with ForNAV. It has it's own format that is not convertible to RDLC.

However, it has a lot of pros like cost effectiveness and high performance (no memory issues, fully executed on service tier) ...

Yes, it's a choice to make.

At our (end-user) company we did convert to RDLC, but if ForNAV had been around already we most probably would have used ForNAV lowering the cost and the `lead-time.

Hi Jonathan, Thanks for your reply.

Problem is updating using ForNav will not generate an RDLC Report. meaning most of RDLC reports features will be missing. That will lead us to create all converted report by ForNav from scratch in order to have RDLC reports features.

hi M.Zayed, fornav is used to convert/upgrade classic reports to rdlc reports (used since nav 2013). for the upgrade step nav 2016 --> nav 2017 you won't need it, just only upgrade the database. no need to upgrade the reports using a special tool.

for special customizations like sorting in the report it's needed that you edit the upgraded rdlc report and add the needed functionality.

    for sorting follow blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../interactive-sorting-in-dynamics-nav-2013-reports

    Dear Luc van Vugt,

    Dear Roberto Stefanetti ,

Thanks alot for your feedback's. The question is what is the most accurate thing to do for our Future?

If we Update the reports from NAV_2009 to NAV_2016 using ForNav the job will be easy and quick! but lets say in 2 years we want to update to NAV_2017. We we have to stick with ForNav tool to upgrade the 2016 report version (Which we already created using ForNav) to the 2017. I personaly find that the features ub RDLC are really nice in terms of interactive reporting.

Also which I am really missing in ForNav is the ability for the report to be a dynamic report like RDLC. meaning the ability for the report to be interactive for example sorting the reports results and allowing some actions to happen of you clicked on certain part of the report.

any Recommendation regarding the future updates?

True, the reports look like "classic", that was the intention as it is more intuitive then RDLC. Converting 240 reports (technically) as a matter of minutes with ForNAV. Of course you need to test the reports after that, but that's the case with any solution.

In my opinion: a great tool, worth the money. And the ForNAV team is really dedicated in getting you the best experience and result.

    hi,

    My case histories

We use ForNAV (i was a beta tester of v1.0), my company is now an italian partner reseller of ForNAV; i work also with Simplanova and i tested also Simplanova report designer.

    My opinion:

    ForNAV

is a good product (the report Designer is like Classic Client report designer with same rules\options.. good for people that hate to work with RDLC..), reports converted are 100% identical to classic reports (i te

    Simplanova Report Designer

If you like to design directly RDLC layouts, Simplaniova report designer is a great tool to create reports using "wizard like" inteface.

    My Scenarios

I use ForNAV to convert old NAV releases with a lot of reports to new releases..... Simplanova if users want to create new reports.

    They are two great products.

RE: What is your feed back about this tool "For NAV" http://fornav.com?

    Hi M.Zayed,

In our experience, ForNAV has worked very well. It has allowed us to significantly cut down on report transform time, with near accurate results. There is an ongoing cost for its use, and yes, it requires the use of the ForNAV tool to make further modifications to the reports, but in our experience, for any customer with more than 5 reports to transform from Classic to RDLC, this tool will save you and your customer time and money. The more reports, the more money you will save.

There are some competitors to ForNAV in the marketplace:

    - Simplanova has a tool that our lead developer has tried and given positive feedback on

    - 1ClickFactory: They have been around for some time and have a well-priced service. But, in our experience, there is still much work that needs to be done by a developer for some reports even after it's been transformed by their tool / service.

I hope this helps with your project. If my response has answered your question, please verify by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"
