Upgrade Dynamics NAV 2017 to 2018

Posted on by 369

We have a fresh installation for our company with zero customizations. Standard Nav 2017 is running and operating on a daily bases.

We are willing to upgrade Dynamics NAV 2017 to 2018, and stop the operation for one day. We will take full back up of the SQL database and follow the upgrade steps.

My question is:

  • Is it enough to back up the SQL, so that in case the upgrade failed at the middle for any reason, we can restore the SQL database and operate all over again as a disaster recovery ?
  • We are following Microsoft Docs on this link, is it enough ? Is it enough ?
  • Is there any common points to be considered for Dynamics NAV 2017 upgrade ?

Thanks in Advance,

Service Tier (NAV Server), NAV Administration (the app in your previous image) and prerequisites like .NET Framework. Your problem is related to something in your configuration (port or user). Can you check your Event Viewer in the NAV server machine and post here the error in details?

Have you changed the port numbers for NAV 2018 service? They cannot be the same as the NAV 2027 service on the same machine.

    An update

I have installed NAV 2018 on the same server, without removing NAV 2017 or stopping the service. After the installation has completed, I got the following error:

    Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server Components

    Fatal error during installation.

The service 'Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server [DynamicsNAV110]' (MicrosoftDynamicsNavServer$DynamicsNAV110) failed to start. This can be caused by one of several issues. For example, the password for the account that runs the service may be incorrect, or there could be a conflict in port sharing for the port settings for the service, or you have specified that the port for the server should be opened in the Windows firewall even though the Windows firewall is not enabled on the computer. For more information, see the event viewer.

    Any idea ?

    1) Yes, it's enough. Perform a FULL backup and don't delete the old NAV 2017 Service Tier (the NAV Service actually running connected to the NAV 2017 DB) because you can re-use it if something fails.

    2) Yes, in this link there are all the steps

    3) Migration from NAV 2017 to 2018 is quite simple. The only thing to be considered is that you need to check if you've customized objects on NAV 2017 and (if so) merge them.
