Automatic code merge

Hi all,

First off, I am not a developer so this might not make sense...

We are upgrading our 2012 R3 CU11 to CU12.

Our developer used the auto merge function since we're short on time, but also tells me that they normally compare object by object manually. This is a process that takes around 40 hours. So, my question is, is it safe to use the auto merge function or will that give me huge headaches later on?

How is this normally done?

    Hi Bjorn

    We like to merge layer conflicts manually for peace of mind.

     

    Auto merge advantages

    Quick (Cheap)

    Doesn't require developer

    Auto merge disadvantages

    Any issues/errors can only be fixed when they come out in the wash, testing/UAT

    Errors may be hidden long term and cause damage

    It would depend on the complexity of your developments and how important it is that you mitigate the risk.

    If, for example, many of your modifications/developments are related to financial postings, I would absolutely 100% have them merged manually. If they are form layouts, give auto merge a go and fix the issues as you find them. If they are somewhere in between, you need to decide how risk averse you need to be.
