Dynamics NAV SMTP error

Hello all,

We have an SMTP setup in our Dynamics NAV 2017 which was working fine, however, a couple of days ago, it seemed to stop.

Whenever I go into the SMTP Mail Setup and test the email, I get the following error.

I've had a look at the Application Server but can't see anything unusual.

Thanks for your help!

    Hi,

Kindly check your event viewer after you test the email. It may provide some additional error details.

Also you can check the below discussion. It mentions to check your O365 settings.

    Hi Tina,

    Thanks for your reply.

With regards to the event viewer, should I be looking at the Database server or the Application Server?

    regards,

    Nadim

    Hi Cellisimo,

Did you follow the below steps?

1.Navigate to SMTP setup from the search bar then click on 'Apply Office 365 Server Settings'

    2. SMTP Server and Server Port Details are auto filled, here you need to enter a valid email id and password for the same.

    3. Click on Test Email Setup. This will prompt you whether you want to send the Test email to the email id provided. select the email id and click on OK. If everything works fine you'll get the below message

    Hi Chris,

Yes, except our SMTP server is hosted and those setting just given you the typical ones.

What's confusing is that in my Test environment (which has a separate App and Database server), it works...

    thanks again,

    Nadim

    Hi,

You need to navigate to Event viewer->Windows logs->Application to check the logs.

Seems you are using authenticated relay, for which you do need permissions in order to send as/on behalf of another user. Instead, you can try configuring the "direct send" method as detailed in this article: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/How-to-set-up-a-multifunction-device-or-application-to-send-email-using-Office-365-69f58e99-c550-4274-ad18-c805d654b4c4?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US or

    if its exchnage technet.microsoft.com/.../aa998291(EXCHG.80).aspx

    and use that user .

This should pretty much work out-of the box. I've had three cases in the last week, where Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) was configured for the account used for SMTP authentication. Make sure that's not the case for your account, or set up an app password for it.

    • To set up an app password, go to [View:https://aka.ms/mfasetup:750:50] and log on using the account configured in the SMTP Mail Setup page.
    • Go to the App Passwords page (it's not an obvious link, but it looks like part of the page title)
    • Create a new app password, give it a name, and save it somewhere safe as it won't be shown again.
    • Replace the password in the SMTP Mail Setup page with the app password you just generated, and test again.
