New to Dynamics. SQL question.

We are just now in our preliminary stages.

Currently we have a SQL 2008 R2 machine that handles our Production Management Software - Jobpack. Separately we use MYSQL on a Linux server in the cloud for our online website. We are planing on converting the cloud server to Server 2008 R2 and MSSQL 2008 R2 - or current version and merging these into a single MSSQL database at some time during this implementation. (Our website system is custom made by in-house programmers.)

We are assuming, a MSSQL database in the cloud and ours in-house will be able to replicate each other. But I have no idea how this actually works, or if this is the best approach.

Are there any suggestions on best way to do this or even if it is viable? These databases are separate now and have different functions. Our goal is to merge them and their functions/data, keeping a database in the cloud for performance sake.

Any advise would be appreciated,

Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the help Steve. We are not doing this after all.

    Hi Mike,

What you are suggesting is definitely possible.

The only major requirement is that the 2 servers can somehow see each other.

There are many options for replication,  such as transactional replication,   log shipping,  database mirroring.

All of them have things to be aware of,  failover time, recoverability,  asynch vs non asynch etc.

Without knowing a lot more detail, it's impossible to suggest the best route, but in principle what you are asking is definitely possible,

Let me know if you want specific details on any of the topics,

    Steve
