Help with VAT Settlement

Hi all, 

We are currently using Business Central on the cloud UK localization and are making use of MTD (making tax digital). We have submitted a return to HMRC and it has been accepted - so far so good. 

The problem then is that an ex-employee, has somehow made the postings to the settlement account and the vat entries for the vat period were closed (we're not sure yet if the postings were done manually rather than using the calc. & post routine). Although the vat entries for the vat period were closed, the vat return period of MTD is still showing as open. 

Is there a way how we can close the vat return period at this stage? We of course cannot start a new one because it says that the previous one is not yet closed and we cannot open the vat entries either since they are closed. 

Any suggestions, please? Thanks in advance.
