Hey Microsoft NAV community,

What is the difference between posting and releasing a purchase order?

Are there any books or tutorials that you all could recommend for a simple end user to learn the NAV environment?

Thanks for any answers that help.

    As Suresh well explained,

Release means you have confirm the purchase order and asking to system to do the calculation and other related activities.

Posting can be in 2 steps.

    1. GRN - Where you receive the inventory and not make a effect to your ledger accounts ( there is a way to effect the expected cost while receiving the goods)

    2. Invoice - Where you enter the actual cost and send the transaction details to your ledger accounts.

RE: posting vs releasing a purchase order?

    William,

    In simple language

Release means you completed entry of the order and ready to process it. In Navision once you release it will do all the calculations and check, the processing/warehouse team can process the orders. If you want to make any changes after release you have to re-open.

It is is just one way to let warehouse personnel know that order is ready to receive.

Posting means respect to Purchase order, you received the goods and ready to receive in the warehouse. So when you post the PO you are increasing the inventory of the goods and the same time you receive the invoice from the vendor.

If you don't release and post, on the background the posting routine will execute the release function for you and will do all the calculations and check.
