Tracking Sales to the GL

Currently we track sales to the GL by item type but we are investigating the possibility of change the tracking of sales to the GL from inventory type to customer type. Is that possible?

We are on 2011 Dynamics SL.

If using OM you could set the default GL accounts to use in Order Management - Order Type - Accounts tab. The online help gives an example of using wildcard characters, and reading the GL defaults from the AR Customer Class setup.
