After I closed the year end and started to print check, I received this message "Date must be in an open 1099 year, please reenter." What does that mean? How could I fix it? Thanks

You need to make sure 2012 is an open calendar year in the 1099 Calendar Year Control screen.

Correct.  You want to purge open items to move the first open year from 2010 to 2011.  You can only have 2 years open at one time in SL.

You will need to go into the A/P module under Process there is a screen called 1099 Calendar Year Control. Roll the calendar year using this screen.
