We are running Nav2009R1 in a 3-tier environment using classic clients and everything works fine. I installed an rtc on a win7 machine to begin working on rtc and it seemed to install ok, but as soon as I login, I get the message "The program could not create a connection to the server."
I am on the same PC that I use for the classic client and that works flawlessly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You can have the Classic Client AND RTC clients both connected, even from the same machine, but as Kine has mentioned, the Classic Client is doing a direct connection to the SQL Database, and not using the Service Tier (which makes it a 3-Tier install). The RTC however does go through the Service Tier (This is NOT the same as the application server which is just a headless client that you can offload processes too), and must be setup with Kerberos and security correctly so the 3-Tier 'hops' will work properly. So setting up the RTC is much more complex than just connecting with the Classic Client. There are many things to look at for the RTC all the way from AD (Active Directory) to the account you are using to run the Service Tier Service and making sure the SPN's are set up propery for connecting. Much of this is in the documenation though to look through, otherwise i would suggest opening up a support incident to help you through this or working with a partner direclty that has set it up prior. Here is a pretty good resource for reading through:
msdn.microsoft.com/.../dd301077.aspx
The error you mention is in the article, and could be just something simple like the format of the "Server Address" you are typing into the Select Server form when launching the RTC.
Kine_,
Please bear with me, I'm just trying to work this through.
So even though I followed the steps in the 3-tier walkthrough and carefully set things up on both the application server and the sql server, the classic client is essentially ignoring the application server?
Have I also been incorrect in thinking I could have both classic clients and rtcs connected to the same application and sql servers?
Thanks.
Dave
The problem is, that you NEVER used the NAV Server, because classic client is connecting directly to the DB Server! Or, you mean NAV Application Server by the "Navision server"? It is something different than NAV Server I mean! You need to look at the difference between two-tier (which you have used until now) and three-tier architecture. I recommend to contact your partner for help, because I see lack of knowledge here…
When you are selecting server n classic, you are selecting SQL server. When you are selecting server in RTC, you need to select server where NAV Service Tier (NAV Server) is running. This service must be correctly installed and configured. See e.g. this: msdn.microsoft.com/.../dd301130.aspx
Not sure what you mean. We've been running 3-tier for over a year with only classic clients. Clients on user's pcs, Navision server on a separate server, navision database on a separate SQL server.
I am trying to add an rtc and it refuses to connect. I can't find any instructions for adding an rtc to an existing 3-tier environment that is running only classic clients so I don't know where to start.
" 3-tier environment using classic clients"? There is something wrong. When using classic client, it is not 3-tier. If you want to use RTC, you need to have NAV Server somewhere installed...
