Returning Consumed Items to Inventory

(0) ShareShare

Is there a way to return an item to inventory after a production order is completed? For example, in a BOM say I have a quantity of 1 for 'Item A.' The item is used/consumed in a production order, so it would subtract one from the total inventory for 'Item A. Would it be possible to add one to the inventory for Item A when the production order is 'Reported as Finished?' This would return the inventory back to the original amount and allow us to see if there are any 'Item A's' available for use in other production orders while others are being used in separate PO's. (Item A would be a tool or material necessary to complete a job, but wouldn't be part of the finished product)

I feel it is the third or fourth time I am answering this question...

Doesn't it work with using two opposite BOM lines and Start/Finish Flushing Principle?

Do you only need to consider the flushing principles for the BOM items? Would the 'Automatic BOM Consumption' settings under 'Manufacturing Execution' also need to be altered? The opposite BOM lines works for preventing consumption, but they cancel each other when I 'Start' the production order. I would like for them to cancel each other out when the PO is 'Reported as Finished'

    There are several considerations, e.g..

    1. To get the item back into stock

2, To get the cost of production of the parent item correct.

    3. QA why would you have one left over? ( did you over issue, is the BOM wrong, was it  a non standard quantity with fixed scrap, or did you not make to standard, was there some left over items not on stock to use up etc.)

If you pick and issue, then its in wip so you have to reverse pick.

If the order is backflushed, then this problem should not arise.

If you forward flush, then you might under-produce and have some components left.

An item can also be recovered by adding it again as as a by product line, and receiving it.

If the order is ended then you can do nothing about the cost so just  plus it on to stock  and your production loss is offset by a stock gain.

If your order has reached the status Report as finished and you want to reverse it back to an earlier stage, you can, and then you can do your bookings allover again with amended quantities. (However, you must run estimation and operations scheduling or job scheduling, or both, again to update the information on the order. This is because any reservations of remaining item consumption and operations resource consumption must also be reset.)

I need to get the item back to stock because the item is simply a tool needed by a machine to complete a production order. We want to put the tool on the BOM so we can track it throughout the production process. I want the tool to have a quantity of 1 throughout the entirety of the production order, and then have it return to inventory when the order is ' Reported as Finished' to avoid consumption.

Then add it on one line and take it back as a by product then you can see expected issues and receipts via mrp, and know when its not available.

Can you do By-products/co-products in AX 2009?

Fredrik I have done the above, but the picking list for the negative line is processing at a positive. It is also not getting returned electronically to stock.

Try adding a  minus line on the Production Order.

To return material,  create a negative Picking List Journal line (which is effectively the same as  by-product).  Dynamics AX allows any item to be ‘returned’ this way (which is why it works for by products) so bea ware you can create a material cost credit using items that have no relation at all with this production order.

Its generally better practice to not select the item and instead to use the Lot-ID selection to return items back to the warehouse. The return will then be posted to go back to the original  issue  location -  which is not always what happens physically. Even when you enter a specific location in the Picking list journal, the system will ignore that, when a Lot-ID, is selected and it will use the location it from the Prod-BOM line. Without Lot-ID, you can return the item to any location.

In the old  Connect-site there was a related enhancement request . (id-787260)

If your problem is that the production order is effectively closed and you can no longer transact, then you are really in the position of a cycle count finding a piece and adding it back to stock.

For a tool/change-part  a negative bom line seems the best approach so you can see where it is and when it is expected to available for other orders

ok I have been able to get the tool to get pulled to the order and returned off the order. but when the tool is returned off its not returning to stock with a value. whish is throwing my average cost off on the tool item in stock.
