Right now, we're using Kit BOMs as a way to track which of our products are assemblies or "kits" vs. stand-alone items.
When we make a sales order, we will just put the kit's item number in the sales line. There's a function to "explode" the kit and requisition all the components, but this only works when all parts are in stock. So we have situations where SOME are on-hand and others are on order. And our salespeople might see the on-hand quantity of a part and assume they can sell it.
This is a sample of what the Kitting tab looks like on the item card:
To view its contents, we can click the dropdown arrow on the right side of Kit BOM No., and it pulls up Kit BOM List. From there, we filter it by the number that's in that box, and it shows the contents of the kit.
However, what I noticed is that, regardless if we do reservations or not, only the kit itself (e.g. CA000037) will show an actual non-zero value for "Qty. on Sales Order"
If I look at the kit components, those all say 0. So we run into a problem where something can be sold by itself or as part of a kit, and we'd see that "qty. on sales order" is zero and assume the inventory we have on hand is fair game to sell, when in reality it's being reserved for an order... as part of a kit.
This might be a simple fix, but I wanted to ask. I see "Automatic Build Kit BOM" but don't know what it does. Essentially what we want to do is have the individual kit components be "reserved" somehow, either by reservations or "qty. on sales order" or anything else.
By the way, I notice a "Qty. on Kit Sales Lines", which pulls up a Kit Sales Lines List when clicked on, but there's never anything there. Is there something we should be doing differently when selling a kit? That might solve this as well!

Hello,
First, thank you for your patience in advance. This did not get followed up by anyone on the community team. I'm a NAV North America support person, so I will answer the request.
The Automatic Build Kit on a Kit Item will push the components to the Kit Sales Lines. If you don't have Automatic Build Kit on the Item Card, then the components don't populate the "Qty. in Kit Sales Lines" because the assumption is that you are selling a "pre-built" Kit stored in stock that was processed through the BOM Journal.
With Automatic Build Kit, I have seen companies Reserve components when Kits are using the Auto Build kit feature, so the components are brought to the Sales Order Lines.
Please note that in NAV 2013 through NAV 2017, Assembly replaces Kitting has greater integration with Planning with the new Assembly Order, so it may be helpful to look at the newer version Assembly features. The only downside is that the Automatic Disassembly for Kits in 2009 was not built into Assembly Management in NAV 2013 and later versions.
The Kit Whitepaper may help further, which can be downloaded from the following link

I hope the information helps you move forward.
