How to manage Machine Repairs

(0) ShareShare

Hi All,

I have the following case. A workshop provides repair services to machine equipment of vessels. That means that they receive a machine and the perform the following tasks:

  • Initial Inspection of Machine
  • Send a Quotation to the Customer, and if OK
  • Perform Repair activities (like valves overhauling). Usually they decompose the machine to components. Each one of the components may have different repair activities. At the end they assemble again the machine.
  • Quality Control

The question is how to manage it?

  • A. Project Production?
  • B. Service?

BR,

Michalis

For this sort of repair service I have only ever really used an ISV add-on to control the machine and use service works orders to repair. You could try to segregate by warehouses and create the item eaach time, the BOM is itself and the spare parts, labour is the labour booked (routes are difficult). The initial inspection could be a quality order prior to the production, it depends upon the process and what you want to do with costs, or the first route could be the assessment and inspection. You would need to create a project for the repair and issue out a quotation for the repair. You could look at the Service side, but I have only ever got that to work in one specific area, although it was simple machine repairs with quotes, so again you could look, but the issue I have with that is the repeating machine and tracking the history etc.

    Hi Steven,

tracking history in this case is no important.

    Two questions:

-Service Work Orders have the same functionalities of Production Order with regards to resource capacity planning,  job scheduling?

-Service Work Order allows me a machine to decompose in subsystems?

    Hi Michalis

Capacity from the Service works order uses the same engine, but it is part of the project. I would say no on job scheduling because it uses a forecast by work time, so you do not get the same granular approach to jobs, but you would need to look at it to decide if it does what you want it to do within the definition of that statement. Do not expect the functionality of a works order from a routing perspective, it is project forecasting, so look at that. You will also need to look at service tasks which form elements like the hours, as well as project category groups and transaction types.

Decompose in subsystems? I presume you mean BOM hierarchical structure. Again it really depends on your definition. BOM Versioning allows a business to create the physical structure of the service object and track the replacement parts used throughout the structure, so you could use BOM versioning, but how this works within the process and practically for you is down to the detail.

As a cautionary note I had to look, but the time I implemented this was version 4 in March 2010 - although I am not sure they have done that much to Service since!
