Nav 2018 user NavUserPassword not working

I have an installation of Nav 2018 that works fine using windows as the client credentials. I have changed the service tier to use NavUserPassword and updated the thumbprint with the one from my public cert. I have removed the 1st char from this so it inserts ok. Made the change to the clientusersettings.config in the user appdata roaming folder from windows to navuserpassword. When I run the rtc it asks for the user and password. After entering these it comes back after a long wait with an error

The program could not create a connection to the server

Hi PhilD,

Firstly check this user is present or not in NAV, if present then,

Please remove DnsIdentity value from clientusersettings.config and then try, else first set up a user with NAV password and then try with that user.

Hi PhilD,
Please check if the User is present in the Users. If not you might have to set that up first.

It could be a problem related with the certificate. Can you please check your Window Event Log and see if there's an error message there?
