Microsoft Dynamics AX (Archived)

Which AX version we should go for upgrading our ERP environment.

Hi guys,

We are using Dynamics AX 2012 R2 version and now we are planning to upgrade our AX environment.

I need your advice and suggestions which version AX we should go for. I checked with our Microsoft Partner and he said right now most stable version is AX 2012 R3 CU10. But somewhere I'm feeling if AX 7 is already there in the market then why we should not go for it.

I heard following below comments from Microsoft Partner and from different blogs.

1. They said AX 7 is still new and not stable.

2. They said it supports off premises only, we cannot host/implement in our data center.

3. Currently the most stable AX version is AX 2012 R3, etc.

Need your help and experience if someone already implemented or started working on AX7.

Thanks,

Hi Mirza Mujib Ur Rahman Baig,

You are right the latest available version of AX is AX 7. However, there is no "upgrade" available right now so you will have to do reimplementation ( there is code upgrade but no data upgrade).

AX 7 has been released recently, it's quite "stable" and there are lots of customers using it right now. However, not all localisations are supported so you need to check if localisation for your country is available.

AX 7 does not support on-premise, only in cloud. On-premise version will be released somewhere in 2017.

The latest version of AX 2012 is AX 2012 R3 CU11.

It's hard to give you an advice should you go with AX 2012 R3 CU11 or AX 7 because it's completely different costs for you business and different licence model ( in AX 7 you are paying per user per month). Also cloud may be not suitable for you or you will have to wait for release of localisation.

It could be a good idea to talk directly to Microsoft about AX 7.

Please refer to ax.help.dynamics.com/en where you can find lots of additional information about AX 7.

Hi Mirza Mujib Ur Rahman Baig,

It would be interesting to know why your partner said that AX7 is not stable but AX2012 R3 is? (no. 1 and no. 3)

Did you get any supporting arguments on the underlying reasons why they assess AX7 as not being 'stable'?

No. 2 is is (currently) correct. Do you respectively your partner see this a problem or an Chance/opportunity?

Would be great if you could share your/your partner's thought.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Mirza,

What is the reason to plan for an upgrade now? If you have customizations, the most stable version would be probably your current AX 2012 R2 version. If you can do your daily work without problems, what is the business case to spend a lot of money? You can wait a bit longer to upgrade. Then probably AX7 might be a supported migration path.

Note that AX7 is initially based on the codebase of AX 2012 R3 with CU9. The code upgrade is also currently depending on this version.

Further I totally share the thoughts of Ievgen and Ludwig

    Hi Ludwig,

    1. They said for AX 7 still developments and enhancements are going and It is somewhere we believe its in the initial stages.

    2. Actually our company they still needs time to think even our ERP will go to cloud :)

    Thanks Ludwig for the feedbacks,

    Hi Andre,

Actually we've started this upgrading plan six months ago but due to some issues, we couldn't make it faster. Now the company needs to implement it ASAP because we were not using employee and managers self services through sharepoint portal. Actually its a good idea to postpone it for some time but due to some HR services we need to make it as soon as possible.

    Thanks Andre,

    Dear Mirza,

We (Emile Egger & Cie SA) are live on "The New Microsoft Dynamics AX" (aka AX7), since April. I can tell you that this version is really awesome, and indeed, quite stable for us. Indeed, if you are planning to have it on-prem, you will face many issues : we would like to go on-prem, but we did not receive convincing answers yet. As pointed out, many localizations are not yet available, but depending on what you deploy, this is not an issue. We even managed to go live in India with minor workarounds.

One of the main problems currently, is the lack of partners trained for the new AX, but most of them are really willing to deploy it and to make an extra effort, because they know this is the future!

    Have a nice day!

    Hi Mirza,

The Employee Self Service is also available with AX 2012 R2.

Microsoft is still investing in AX7 and also (maybe less) in AX 2012 R3.

Also they are still continuously changing Office365. Does this makes the system unstable?

    Hi Raphael,

Yup you are right, due to lack of AX 7 experts partners are still pushing for AX 2012 R3. And you highlighted one more important thing i.e. localizations.

    Thanks Raphael :)

I would also suggest considering the fact that updating to 2012 R3 will be significantly cheaper and faster than to AX7.

Please consider waiting for the first AX7 update and hybrid/on-premises version. If You do not have experience with Azure AD or cloud whatsoever than AX7 administration might be a tough task.
