Extracting all setups

Hi All

Is there any way in AX to extract all setups for all modules : Sales, purchasing, stocks....?

My idea is to extract the whole setup to check it, but also to check it if never some one frlm the team touch to something.

Thanks.

You have to first define what you mean by "setups". You can't start building a solution without a more concrete idea about the goal.

Also, what's the purpose of the extraction? In other words, what are you going to do with the exported data? "To check it" didn't tell me much.

Your scope is really too broad. According to MSFT information, there are more than 230 tables for storing parameter in standard AX package (refer document in following link).

Some parameter tables only for some functionality, e.g. DMF, EP, SRS (see "table group" column in above document )

Some parameter tables may only locate in TempDB or InMemory (see "table type" column in above document )

I suggest it's better you start to monitor few of them that affect you so much. You can add whatever you want later.

There are some ways you can use to track changes of table in AX

    • To enable ModifiedDataTime and ModifiedBy on parameter table is the easier option.
    • To enable Database Log on those table is another option, but performance impact should be considered.

If the scale is really that big and it needs to be recurring, i personally prefer to do it in SQL server level. You can first make a copy of all parameter tables to another DB and compare them with those tables in AX DB to find any change (but i can't see this is that important to spend such great effort)

    Hello

My need is to export all configurations that i made in each module : Sales, stocks, security profils...

    For example :

1.for items, i want to export prices, conversion units...

    2. Profil security (rules): to export by user, its rules... ans export also each rule what it contains...

    3. Taxes group...

I hope my need is clear now :)

I agree it is not useful. According to your definition everything is a setup. You say export prices but items themselves are setup information.  Dynamics is highly normalized so you are talking thousands of tables. Tables are identified in  the AOT by their usage but it is still thousands of each type.

Why do you need to do this to avoid configuration change? Do you afraid user changing configuration in system and lead to system malfunction?

    Yes exactly :)

Your approach then to export data is incorrect.

You would keep gold SQL backup of the initial system setup that you can keep as a reference.

In case you do a larger version upgrade, you can create a new gold backup by stripping transactional data.

ModifiedBy and ModifiedDateTime properties could be enabled on critical tables so at least you know who has touched the values the last time. You could add database logging for update operation on them, since tables like Parameters rarely change. You should avoid putting too many database logging on your system, since that comes at the cost of a performance overhead for your application.

Will you consider setting security or provide required training instead. Otherwise, you will be so annoyed as you are always the last man to take care of them.
