Ax 2012 R3 Visual Studio tools missing

Hi,
i'm trying to install the Visual Studio Tools (CU8). I have Visual Studio 2013 installed and due to the installer all prerequisites are installed. The installation stops because the folder VSTools64 and the file VSTools64.msi was not found. I thought the VSTools come with the standard installation package.

Where can i get the VSTools?

Greetings Nils

    Hi Nils,

shouldn't be the VSTools part of the slipstream installation of R3CU8?

But haven't tried to setup directly (from the scratch) from a fully slipstreamed Installation DVD

    regards

    Hi Douglas,

the extracted DVD is the only source available to me right now. In all previous versions the VSTools came along with the regular DVD.

    Hi Nils,

the VisualStudioTools for VS2013 are new since R3CU8. So they cannnot be part of the original installation dvd.

What's about the other way of installing CU8 components using the internet based installer? Doesn't  this work?

    Haven't checked this.

But because of the changed update concept starting from CU8 (no standalone axupdate package any more) you probably have to create a new installation DVD (slipstreaming the original R3 with the slipstream files from CU8 slipstream download). Or just "unzip" the slipstream download and select the aprropriate files.

    regards

    Douglas

I think Douglas is right. I have an R3 install image into which I have slipstreamed CU8. The folder structure for the update contains a vstools64:

I believe the alternative to slipstreaming is to use the LCS Updater:

Their is an updated slipstream package at https://update.lcs.dynamics.com/Download/Index/ which contains the missing .dll

You can use this updated package, or you can update your existing package with this missing .dll.

    Hi

Wanted to know, how you created these subfolders under KB2998197.

I mean all I got from the update was file with extension saved as *.axupdate.

Is there a way to convert this to the msi package like you did ?

I do not have a zip file but just an *.axupdate file with me which downloaded

    Hi,

you HAVE TO download the CU8 Slipstream package. It's roundabout 600 MB in size. This is an .exe file which has an selfextracting stub (asks for the destination dir). Or you can use some other tool to 'unzip' this exe.

Within the created directory structure you will find msi\vstools[32|64] folders with the msi files.

You must use the slipstream package and copy the complete content to your update folder under the setup dvd.

BTW:  I didn't see a changed slipstream package in all cases. The CU8 current one is identical to the first one.

    regards

    Douglas

I managed to install VSTools Dev 2013 without slipstreaming.

I broke up my steps into three folders:folder for R3 Setup, folder for CU8 kernel and app and setting up the VSToold2013 using update package.
