How long does the approval hierarchy can go? How many additional approvers can we add in the 2013R2 version?

Two level of approval hierarchy in NAV 2013 R2. You have multiple level with NAV 2016 version.

And then I opened a NAV 2013R2 database and it seems that it carries a multilevel approval hierarchy as well. Let me know.

As mentioned in the link, you can have additional approver setup in NAV 2013 R2 version. This means, you can have max. two level of approval in NAV 2013 R2 version.
In NAV 2013R2, approval workflow is not that extended as needed. It is more of single level approval. If you try to define additional approver, all the documents would go to that particular person for approval purpose, which would not help.
Whereas in NAV 2016, you can have conditional based multilevel approval and you can define multi-level hierarchy, which is not possible with earlier versions.
