Why when I carry forward end Trial balance, they duplicate the balances as open balances

The system should not duplicate things.
What will happen is that a separate entry is made in the opening period for the following year that records the beginning balances of all of your Balance Sheet accounts.
To avoid that you have duplicate balances recorded those opening balances are recorded in a separate period with a special type that is used only for internal purposes but that does not impact your trial balances and financial reports other than showing the beginning balances.
I would recommend that you do a test run of the closing process especially if you have not done it before. This gives you the opening balance transactions and allows you checking things before you do that in your live environment.
