Tracking user changes in AX

Hello, I am wondering if there is a way in AX 2012 R3 to track what users made what changes. Specifically, we had a user change the assigned category to an item in inventory and are trying to identify who it was. Is it possible to find this information?

Thanks!

    Hi,

Please check the field ModifiedBy on tables EcoResCategory and EcoResCategoryHierarchy(if the change is latest). You can enable database logging on these tables to track in future.

    Refer the following link:

(Configure and manage database logging [AX 2012])

    Thanks,

Be careful about data logging if you regularly add new items.

Also limit who has access to such master data fields- most people should only need view rights.

There also ways to monitor such changes at the Sql level. In this case I think that the suggested option of viewing the table is the right approach

If you don't want them to modify, please think of setting up security roles. And for now if you are looking for a column changes for an item, check table InventTable and other related tables.

AX provides various ways which have been mentioned above to track different things.

But generally I agree that it is your responsibility to lock down the system via using the AX Security framework, not to provide access for people who are not supposed to change specific things.

Here is a more comprehensive list.

    Database logging:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd362089.aspx

You may set it up from the functional UI, no development required. It is not advised to use it for tables which are frequently updated, have a large amount of records inserted, or is performance-critical, such as Inventory transactions, etc. It is safe for use on setup parameters or static data.

    Record changes:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa871620.aspx

Needs development work, the Created/Modified by/datetime properties must be set on specific tables, and you would see who has created or last updated the values.

    Client access log:

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/axperf/2011/10/14/client-access-log-dynamics-ax-2012/

For tracking who has opened a specific form or clicked a button which they were not supposed to touch. It is bulk data, not really good for auditing.

    Alerts:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa499769.aspx

This is the typical approach for tracking sensitive information changes such as a vendor bank account. It uses the same engine as database logging, so do not over-use this.

you need to check all security roles and activate database log.

you can activate database log to track new transaction, modify, delete, ...etc

Thank you all for the responses! I will look into the options you all suggested. In this case I am looking to go back and see who made what change in the system. I am certain the the person who made the change has the correct security role as we assign security roles very carefully; however, they made a change that impacted our reporting/tracking and we would like to know who it was. Also, we would like to be able to track these changes accordingly in the future.

All the solutions above are from the point onwards, they do not work retrospectively. That means you will not be able to tell what happened in the past, only in the future once you activate any of the above logging mechanisms.

Also kindly mark all helpful answers with the checkbox next to each post to resolve the topic.

Okay, thank you. I will have to set up one or more of solutions above then in order to track future changes.

    I appreciate the help.
