I am writing a program that needs to Query GP for smart lists. I have identified some tables in the database with a list of smart lists. However i would also like to execute a smart list get the data and display it in my application.  At the moment we do not intend to write to GP just to retrieve database based on smart lists. is this possible? i am open to any suggestions at this point.

Thanks a Lot Heather Roggeveen I had a look at Views before but i did not put the two together. You have saved me a lot of searching and yes thinking.

Basically i have a program that needs to display GP data as a graph.  and we want to leverage smart lists already defined by users in GP. We are not extending Smart lists at all. Now that we have access to the views all we need to do is connect to GP and display to the user in our application a list of views.

Now that i can see the views, how do i view custom smart lists. (A smart lists created by users.) it seems that the view only has the system smartlists that come with GP

    Keliud

I think you do need to get involved and get things clarified a bit more. Are you looking for extending the smartlist functionality to include data from an external application or it is just that you want to get the smartlist into an external application ?

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

Thank you, Harry, for sharing about SmartList Builder.  It is a great solution in the situation mentioned - as you recommended.  I think Excel Report Builder that is available in SmartList Builder would be the perfect way to help create the views to query the data if the default views don't work.  Thanks also for passing on the comparison as I agree - it's really helpful.  In terms of the future of SmartList Builder, it is definitely not "murky" at all.  As soon as we took the product back from Microsoft, we rolled out 8 new product features and we have another set of new features just about to release for GP 2015.  We have major development resources invested in SmartList Builder and over 13,000 customers on it so it is definitely not going away.

    Hi,

I assume you are going to use an external program outside Microsoft Dynamics GP and it requires to display the smartlist data from GP into your external application. Yes, it can be done. As said by Heather , the smartlist data are displayed in the GP application based on the SQL views available inside the Company Database on SQL server. You can call the specific views from your external application to get the data. I assume your application is only used for display purpose.

Your post's title used the words "external program." If you want to extend SmartList functionality to include data from external programs, I would recommend SmartList Builder from eOne Solutions.

Here is a link to a comparison of SmartList Builder vs SmartList Designer.

    www.eonesolutions.com/.../BuilderVsDesigner

As of GP 2013 R2, SmartList Designer is included in GP, at no additional cost. SmartList Builder must be purchased from eOne Solutions, and is a 3rd Party solution with a "now murky" future, based on the direction Microsoft is taking with SmartList Designer.

All of the SmartLists are based on database views.

If you expand the views area in the SQL Server, you will see them all - named very similar to the SmartLists e.g. Accounts, AccountSummary

You will probably need to grant Windows users access to the views.  You can do this by adding the windows user via SQL Security setup.  You need to tick access to the users for each database and give them a role that is in the rpt_xxx section.  rpt_poweruser will give users the right to all SmartList information.

Some useful information on this here:  dynamicsgpblogster.blogspot.co.nz/.../sql-assigning-microsoft-dynamics-gp.html

    Hope that helps.
