Upgrade Smartlist Builder and GP Extender from GP 8.00.g7

I was just asked to upgrade an old GP 8.00.g7 to GP 18.4.1434. I noticed in their DYNAMICS.SET file there is SmartList Builder and GP Extender. GP 8 was back when these products were part of GP. I forget when they were given back to eOne.At what version can I start to check if they still work? I am going to ask eOne at what point their upgrade utilities will start to need to be used.

Up until Dynamics GP 2013 R2, there was both an Microsoft version along with an eOne version of SmartList Builder.

After GP 2013 R2, we gave the product back solely to eOne, so there's only their version from that point.

If upgrading from GP 8.0 to GP 18.4, I'm thinking you'd need to upgrade from 8.0 to GP 10.0 and then to GP 2013 R2 including upgrading SmartList Builder from within Dynamics GP, if using Microsoft's version.

Then once you get to GP 2013 R2, upgrading to GP 2016 and then GP 18.4, there will no longer be a 'SmartList Builder' feature to add to the GP installs, thus you'd treat SLB for GP 2016 and GP 18.4 like any other third-party product and upgrade those after upgrading Dynamics GP, contacting eOne for those upgrade steps.

    Thanks

Derek , that is what I needed to know. I will take them to GP 10 and then ask eOne if they are in their database. First I will ask if they are even using either of these products.

    Derek,

I thought that SmartList Builder and Extender were returned to eOne in GP 2013 and it was no longer part of the installer DVD in 2013.. ?

I know that you cannot skip the upgrade between 2010 and 2013, as the set of tables from Extender and SLB will change after that in 2015 and it would fail to properly upgrade if you skip 2013 (which is theoretically possible).

I believe it was more R2 for Dynamics GP 2013 when SLB and Extender went over to eOne.

I know the only way we were able to tell whether a customer was using ours or eOne's version, on GP 2013, was to look at the PRODID 3830 in the DU000020 system table.

Microsoft's version of SLB would have a versionbuild of 21 while eOne's version would have a versionbuild of 58 or something like that.

Everything that I can find, suggests that it was prior to R2 for GP 2013 when SmartList Builder and probably Extender were both available to install via the Additional Features window when installing Dynamics GP.

    Thanks Derek,

that would make sense... I don't recall having installed very often 2013 RTM.. .mostly it was R2 all the time, thus the former eOne products were already removed.

I knew also that for future upgrades, I'd clean up the left over entries in the DU000020 and DB_UPgrade tables, as eOne's upgrade tool doesn't care about those entries and they would remain on version 11 or 12 forever.

SmartList Builder and Extender Standard were moved over to eOne on GP 2013, although SmartList Builder is still on the GP 2013 media.  To make sure you can get SmartList Builder and Extender updated all the way along, here is the basic paths I would recommend.

    • Update GP 8.0 to GP 10.0 (be sure to follow recommended Service Pack versions for the update)
      • Update SmartList Builder and Extender using the GP installation media and GP Utilities
    • Update GP 10.0 to GP 2013 R2   (be sure to follow recommended Service Pack versions for the update)
      • Update SmartList Builder using the GP installation media and GP Utilities and then convert to eOne's SmartList Builder.  Be sure to follow the steps in the upgrade manual to make sure all steps are completed. SmartList Builder 2013 (eonesolutions.com)
      • Update Extender to GP 2013 using the eOne installation media.  Be sure to follow the steps in the manual as there is a lot of changes in this upgrade.  Extender 2013 (eonesolutions.com)
    • Update GP 2013 R2 to GP 2016 (be sure to follow recommended Service Pack versions for the update)
      • Update SmartList Builder and Extender using the eOne installation media
    • Update GP 2016 to GP 18.4 (be sure to follow recommended Service Pack versions for the update)
      • Update SmartList Builder and Extender using the eOne installation media

Hopefully this helps outline it all a little better.

    Nicole
