Sub-divide or breakdown revenue for an opportunity (Salesforce does this very smoothly....)

Hi,
First off, an apology if this question has already been asked & that I've somehow missed it in my searching of this forum.

Here's a common scenario for us.
An opportunity has been created for an annual amount X. The customer provides a monthly revenue forecast, and this is updated each month.

Question.
What is the most efficient way to manage this kind of opportunity ?
The brute force approach is to clone the opportunity 12 times, then edit (or close) each opportunity each month.
This is tedious, not efficient and also relies on having a reliable and effective tool to clone the opportunity (I am open to recommendations, though I am aware of click-to-clone)

The smart solution would be to keep just the 1 opportunity, but have an editable sub-grid in which dates and revenue could be easily amended.
This smart solution is what I am familiar with from using Salesforce in the past.

A further constraint on any solution is that it needs to feed into an accurate view/report of opportunity value by month

Any help or suggestions are most welcome. My very strong preference is to only use native D365 CRM functionality and tools (avoid JS and bespoke add-ons)

Thanks !
