Sales quotation confirmation journal - what is the purpose?

What is the purpose of a sales quotation confirmation journal in D365FO, except for linking the quote to the sales order?

If I introduce an extension to merely change the quotation status to "Confirmed" without creating a sales order (and sales quotation confirmation journal), what will really be missing?

PS: In this business case there is no requirement to convert to an order when a quotation is won.Rather trade agreements will be created based on the quotation for later incoming EDI orders.
