Hi All,
My name is Iulian Lixandru. I am the owner of Empower BI. http://www.empowerbi.com/
We have some experience around the Dynamics products working with our NAV Business Partner CyanSys. http://www.cyansys.com/ They are listed on our web site as our partner.
We are somewhat familiar with BI4Dynamics and JetReports on top of Dynamics because we have been creating mobile reports for clients using Microstrategy where Dynamics clients want a mobile solution. We have been "filling a missing need" as it were.
In doing this sort of work we have seen what we believe to be opportunities to improve on what is currently available from BI4Dynamics and JetReports.
As a BI Consulting company we believe there is a lot more that could be offered in the BI space for Dynamics.
We are considering an investment to create a new Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence solution in the Dynamics space. Just considering mind you.
Obviously the first step in any such investment cycle is to ask questions like:
Is this really a good idea?
How do current BI users of BI4Dynamics and JetReports feel about the solutions they have available to them today?
Is there even a demand for a product that we feel would be a vast improvement?
We are considering this investment based on creating an application neutral industry standard data warehouse data model that can be hosted on any database, including SQL Server, and can use any front end.
We are MicroStrategy experts so we will build a front end in MicroStrategy. But we are open to discussions as to whether other front ends, including MSFT front ends, might be used. We will own the data models and the ETL to populate the data models and the MicroStrategy front end.
We feel that mobile is now a driving force and that MicroStrategy does mobile far better than Excel does mobile. So we see an interest in clients for a mobile solution for all things Dynamics.
So I am introducing myself to this group and putting the questions "out there".
Are Dynamics customers totally satisfied with your current BI solutions?
Are there Dynamics customers who are "hitting the wall" on what it is you are trying to do with Data Warehousing and BI?
Are there Dynamics customers who would like to co-operate with us as development partners if we decide to go ahead with this investment? You would get first delivery of this new leading edge data warehousing solution in return for co-operation.
Are Dynamics customers even aware of what the advantages of a leading edge data warehousing solution might be? Do you see the same issues as we see?
I am most interested in having an open and public discussion on the relative merits of Dynamics customers continuing on with BI4Dynamics and Jet Reports and their development schedules while having a new, leading edge, data warehousing solution being brought to the marketplace by our company.
Naturally, if there is no solid support for such an investment from prospective customers we will spend our investment money elsewhere.
It just seems to us that there is a need in this area that would be relatively easy to fulfill given what we have available to us to bring such a product to the marketplace.
All comments are most welcome!
Best Regards
Iulian Lixandru.
CEO Empower BI.

Hi All,
I am not sure if this is the best place to ask this question.
I work at EBI for Iulian. I am developing the back end needed to populate the new data warehouse we are working on.
We have a test database in Romanian_CS_AS. We generally create our staging areas and DWHs in SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
Naturally we are getting the message
Msg 468, Level 16, State 9, Line 51
Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" and "Romanian_CS_AS" in the equal to operation.
I created another test database with SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and created tables using the select * into feature taking the data from the Romanian_CS_AS database.
For some reason we are still getting the message. It is almost like the table itself still has it's data in Romanian_CS_AS and that it was not converted during the select * into operation.
Does anyone here have a suggestion getting the Romanian_CS_AS data into SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS that is not too onerous?
Thanks in advance.
Mihai.
Hi Roakman,
mobile is becoming a very large part of BI nowdays. Not the only part of course but it is important. Mobile includes ipads and surface and they can present quite a lot of information. Mobile also includes things like informing sales assistants of information direct to their smartphones in real time.
All that aside. I am working on this with Iulian. We are making fast progress. We have already created everything needed to be able to detect deltas on a NAV system and forward the deltas to the staging area. We created a new way of generating the delta detection code from the metadata of the data model.
Having a delta detection capability and the ability to place deltas into a staging area is already a very useful thing for NAV customers to have if they do not do this already. It allows for deletion of old data from the operational system because it is in the staging area. There is also the issue of audit and security. People can conspire and defraud operational systems quite easily. Refer to Barings Bank if you are not aware that this happens.
By creating a staging area that is not able to be updated via the operational systems which maintains records which have been deleted you can discourage fraud in an organisation. Once people know that they can not get rid of the evidence of a fraud they are far less likely to commit fraud.
Staging areas also form the foundation for the data integration processes that are necessary to integrate data from many different sources...not just from an operational system like NAV.
I am a little surprised the thread did not attract any discussion.....perhaps this means little interest....perhaps not.
Hi Iulian,
Nice to know you and hope we have changes to co-operate!
so, still another add-on because the core program is barely adequate?
I really don't see how mobile devices can handle BI, much less NAV, for a company larger than a paper route. But you seem to have more experience with it, so, go for it.
