What is the NOTEINDX column in IV40400

I'm currently on GP 10.0 SP3.  I'm building a hierarchical table of categories with item class codes as the main category, and then we have category1, category2, and category3 stored in extender tables for our items as subcategories.  I was really trying to find a numerical  key for the item class codes, and the only possibilities I can find are maybe the noteindx or the IVIVNDX + IVIVOFIX.  I searched all the tables that have NOTEINDX in them, and none of them seem to correlate to the IV40400's noteindx, so I'm wondering is that a unique number I could use?  Does it tie out to any table anywhere?  Where does it get its next number from, the sequence seems to go up rapidly. (640,643,647,648,649,650,651,652,2134,2550,96477,230843,738313,2073866,2602870)

I don't think I should use the dex_row_id because theoretically the table could get re-built and those numbers might change.

Any insight on the noteindx column in IV40400 would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Scott.

Many GP windows allow for the attachment of record notes.

The Note Master File is the SY03900.

The Note Index file is the record key value to join the two.

In your case the IV40400 - Item Class Master file would relate to the record note for this record class.

It is a common field and can be found in many tables (Customer, Vendor, Item master along with many transaction records)

The ...IX fields your are mentioning tie in to the GL accounts for the different categories, they relate to the GL00100 or GL00105 file.

Not many spare fields other than the User categories 1 to 6 but they are Alphanumeric.

The warranty days can be used as a memo field if needed.

I would recommend using the Extender window to have the Item Number field as the Key and then a lookup field to relate to numeric categories your are trying to associate it with.

    Hope this helps

The SY03900 was the first table I checked.  The noteindx doesn't match anything in that table.  I went to a develoment copy of our GP database and added a new item class and it got a new noteindx but nothing added into the sy03900 table.  In fact in production there are two notes in that table that tie out to other things.

I scanned the entire information_schema.columns to find all tables with the noteindex in it and none of them seem to tie to IV40400

We already have item categories based on numeric keys in the extender windows, but for the "main category" which is the itemclass I wanted a numeric key.

    Scott,

Most records created in GP that can have a note are assigned a NOTEINDX when they are created.  The next NOTEINDX is taken from the SY01500 table in DYNAMICS and is global per company.  That's why the numbers skip.  If you create an item, then create 500 transactions, then create another item, I would expect those 2 items to have a NOTEINDX that is 500 apart because each transaction will be assigned a NOTEINDX.  The SY03900 table only get populated if there is an actual note, so you should not expect to see a record for every possible NOTEINDX there.  Hope this helps explain how the process works.  I would not recommend using the NOTEINDX as a key.
